The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) supports and collaborates with the Unit Manager in the day-to-day operations of their designated unit (s) consistent with NWHMC Nursing Mission, Vision and Values and UW Medicine Patients are First goals. The ANM supports effective and efficient care by focusing on daily staffing and assignments, onboarding new nurses, patient rounding, supporting smooth patient flow and care coordination of complex patients, and unit focus on clinical standards and performance improvement. The ANM is lead on ensuring effective unit-based onboarding and mentoring of preceptors and unit based staff education coordination in collaboration with the clinical education department and/or Clinical Nurse Specialist assigned to specific patient populations or projects. The ANM routinely relieves staff of patient care duties so that they can complete post discharge patient calls and/or represent the department in committees or projects. A primary role of the Assistant Nurse Manager is complex care coordination, oversight of clinical nursing care, and mentorship of nursing staff to a higher level of performance. PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS) Leadership Leadership Works with the unit leadership to operationalize the unit goals to support excellence in patient care for the population of patients served on the designated unit and in supporting the patient placement guidelines. Ensures effective communication within the unit regarding projects, professional practice expectations, standards for clinical practice, staffing guidelines, new equipment/updated processes, unit goals etc. Assist the Nurse Manager in leading staff meetings, demonstrates the ability to run staff meeting independently if needed. Collaborates with other nursing units to ensure safe patient handoff, coordination of resources and daily operations. Reviews monthly unit staffing schedule prepared by the designated administrative coordinator to ensure it adheres to the approved staffing levels/matrix. Plans for coverage due to vacations, LOAs, and vacant positions. Oversees the posting of monthly work schedules following defined contractual schedules by the administrative coordinator and fills in during his/her absence. Provides oversight to administrative coordinator in timecard management, and assures timecard completion and edits are done according to bargaining unit contracts. Assists with or completes timecard approval/sign off for payroll processing. Monitors timecard patterns and provides direct feedback to employee. Monitors and adheres to labor and expense budgets: maintains daily and monthly HPPD reports for the department. Participates in the development of the annual operating budget and capital request process. Participates in the annual evaluation of unit staffing matrix and assists with presentation to the Safe Staffing Committee. Collaborates with the Nursing Supervisor in daily resource management. Provides unit leadership / management coverage in the absence of the Nurse Manager. Clinical Practice. Maintains clinical skills and competence to provide direct patient care and serves as role model in clinical practice for the population served. Relieves nurses of patient assignments to facilitate class attendance, committee work and completion of discharge follow up phone calls. Utilizes knowledge and best practice to investigate and resolve complex clinical problems; develops plans of care for particular populations or individual patients. Serves as patient care consultant/resource to department staff and other health care professionals throughout the organization. Initiates and/or supports clinical research as requested. Supports student nurses clinical experiences on designated unit. Makes patient assignments based upon staff skill level/expertise and mentors clinical coordinators/charge nurses in same. Mentors clinical staff in effective delegation to the appropriate clinical team members and prioritization skills. Monitors unit acuity and patient flow. Coordinates with unit leadership and nursing supervisor to promote coordination of care and patient flow within NWHMC. Supports care coordination activity for complex patients. Building High Performing Teams Supports the Nurse Manager in selection of new hires including reference checking and peer behavioral interviewing. Maintains up to date unit based new hire skills checklist and other supportive onboarding resources. Ensures appropriate number of trained preceptors are available to support unit needs and that preceptor/preceptee meet routinely to review progress and elevate concerns to unit leadership. Supervises all staff on unit to ensure work is performed within hospital or unit standards: provides feedback to employees to address performance issues or concerns; provides input regarding staff performance to Unit Manager. Coordinates unit based education/training requirements and roving in-services for skills updates, new equipment, new processes or focused improvement opportunities. Identifies resources for staff professional growth and development and assists them in meeting their professional goals. Develops action plans to address identified orientation performance issues; keeps the Unit Manager informed of new hire orientation progress or lack of progress. Maintains required documentation and records or employee progress. Participates in the 30, 60 and 90 day progress evaluations for new hires. Participates or completes annual staff performance reviews as requested by the Nurse Manager. Assist the Unit Manager in coaching and counseling to address behaviors not meeting standard. Provides detailed and timely documentation to the Unit Manager of performance and/or behaviors not meeting standards. Assists the Nurse Manager and employee to develop reasonable and measurable action plans to address performance issues. Mentors and supports individual staff to address areas not meeting standard and to improve performance. Defines objective measurements. Supports a Blame Free culture and highly engaged workforce. Maintains a focus on staff safety in daily operations. Quality Participates in the review of evidenced based practice and standard development at the unit level and for NWHMC upon request Participates in and/or leads small working groups and committees at the unit and organizational level. Reviews PI memos, assists the Nurse Manager to evaluate trends and patterns and to develop corrective action plans as needed. Completes and submits PI memos as needed to identify areas for improvement and review actual or potential adverse events. Conducts audits to measure adherence to standard, utilizes data to develop action plans to improve performance and participates in intense review of specific adverse events upon request. . Supports at the unit level and actively participates in organizational identified initiatives such as CAUTI, CLABSI, C Diff, Pressure Ulcers, Fall Reduction, Restraint Reduction, and Behavioral management and other quality initiatives at NWHMC. Demonstrates knowledge in emergency response for all codes and coaches staff in performance/response as needed. Assists with regulatory survey readiness and completes monthly unit assessments utilizing readiness assessment tools. Collaborates with the Unit Manager to develop corrective action plans. Customer Service Participates in patient rounding in collaboration with the Unit Manager with patient rounding – completes patient rounding on one half of unit census daily. Providing feedback and coaching to assigned care providers. Identifies trends from rounding feedback and works with Nurse Manager and the Director of the Patient Experience to formulate plans to identify areas for unit improvement. Reviews Avatar results and weekly Avatar comments with the Unit Manager. Supports the utilization of bedside shift report and care hand offs to include patients and families. Demonstrates understanding of annual patient satisfaction goals and assists with the development and implementation of action plans as needed Promotes excellent customer service and service recovery. Refers unresolved complaints and potential patient grievances to the patient relations staff. Monitors the Patient Call Manager active call list and assigns RN staff to complete calls. Provides coverage for the RN patient care assignment to facilitate the nurse’s ability to make the calls and completed follow up on escalations received through PCM. Reviews unit performance/metrics for PCM. Professional Growth & Development Strives to expand own knowledge and skills, seeks out learning opportunities. Monitors trends in healthcare industry, and adapts to changes and new developments particularly in clinical care of populations served on designated unit. QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

WORK SCHEDULE Full time / 100% FTE Night shifts (7:00pm-7:30am) 32 hours per week as the Assistant Nurse Manager and 8 hours per week of administrative time Rotating weekend shifts required Department Description We are a 43-bed unit at a community hospital We support low acuity telemetry patients, general medical patients, and orthopedic and neurosurgery surgery patients Common surgical procedures on our floor include knee, hip, and joint replacements, calcified bone treatments, neck surgeries, and laminectomies Our staffing grid consistently allows for 1:4 and 1:5 nurse to patient ratios POSITION HIGHLIGHTS Join an organization that supports nursing leadership Lead a close-knit team where everyone’s contributions are recognized Primary Job Responsibilities Act as a shift supervisor, responsible for clinical functions, staffing assignments, and care coordination Act as the main onsite leadership when the Nurse Manager is not present Oversee patient placement and throughput Escalate operational issues and liaise with the Administrator On-Call Plan and implement unit orientation for clinical staff (RNs and CNAs) Foster clinical excellence and incorporate clinical standards into daily practice Provide performance feedback to the Nurse Manager during annual performance evaluations Provide “just in time” feedback to staff regarding clinical performance, interpersonal team interactions, and patient communications Respond appropriately to emergency situations and drills Promote practices and decisions that reduce human error and promote patient safety Requirements 2 years of inpatient hospital nursing experience Previous charge, lead, or supervisory nursing experience Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in Washington State About Uw Medical Center-northwest UW Medical Center is an acute care hospital located in Seattle with two campuses: Montlake and Northwest.
