5 West is a 40-bed non specialty med-surg unit caring for patients ages 18 and older. The staff cares for a variety of medical and telemetry patients with acute and/or chronic illness, such as sepsis, respiratory, gastrointestinal, endocrine, cardiac disease, and COVID-19. Staff members will manage titratable drips, chest tubes, tracheostomies, complex wound care, post-bariatric procedures, high oxygen delivery systems and end-of-life care.

5 West is known as the “5 West Wolfpack” because of its outstanding teamwork. Its centralized nursing station allows staff to build camaraderie, learn and grow together. The culture and close-knit environment on 5 West make this unit ideal for new and experienced nurses. It is the only unit in the hospital to have a Zen room, which features a massage chair, adult coloring books and other materials to support staff who need to reset their mindset.

The staff and leaders on our team are passionate about mentoring, professional development, and finding new and innovative ways to care for patients! 5 West leaders support their new staff by providing in depth orientation, goal planning, progress meetings and check-ins 30/60/90 days post-orientation completion.

5 West will transition to a team-based care delivery model in January 2025. Team based care is a group of licensed and unlicensed healthcare professionals working in unison towards a common goal to care for a group of patients. Our team-based care delivery model consists of Lead Nurses, Registered Nurses, Virtual Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Nursing Assistants.

Team based care allows for nurses to work at the top of their scope and effectively uses each team member’s strengths, skills, and experiences as well as promotes teamwork, communication, and leadership.

Perform delegated patient activities as assigned by licensed nursing personnel for the achievement of patient`s plan of care.

Required Qualifications:

• Minimum of 16 years of age required.

• Possesses a Certified Nursing Assistant certification in the state of Nebraska required.

• Demonstrated effective communication skills required.

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire required, must be from an American Heart Association (AHA) endorsed program (effective for new hires starting January 1, 2023 or later).

• Based on department need, Medication Aide certification and completion of an Injectables course may be required after hire in outpatient settings.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge of computer data entry and word processing preferred.

• Basic knowledge of medical terminology preferred.

Performs receptionist, certified nursing assistant (CNA), and supply management duties in the specified hospital unit. Provides coverage to other hospital units as needed. Schedule: 7:00 PM-7:30 AM 30 Hours/week MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES: Performs receptionist duties including directing visitors and patients' family members; answering incoming phone calls and questions from visitors; directs physicians and other hospital personnel with locating patients or providers; utilizes strong customer services skills. Contacts physician office to obtain any required document for the patient. Performs point of care testing. Performs EKG's as indicated. Maintains charge capture especially for billable supplies.
