Position Summary The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse – Certified Nurse Practitioner (APRN- CNP) or Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C) reflects the mission, vision, and values of University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System, adheres to the UI Health Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and other regulatory and accreditation standards. The APP functions as part of the multidisciplinary health team in accordance with privileges approved by the credentialing committee to provide high-quality, cost-effective advanced care to patients. The APP is responsible for the health outcome of an assigned patient population and consults and confers with supervising physicians in an area of clinical expertise. Per Diem APPs work on an as-needed basis, often filing in for staff shortages. Duties & Responsibilities Works within the Bylaws of the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System and in adherence to hospital and divisional policy. Works collaboratively with other providers in the care of transplant recipients. Performs an accurate history and physical examination of patients. Conducts comprehensive or episodic health assessments and develops patient care plans. Performs procedures according to clinical delineation of privileges. Provides prevention strategies and management of acute and chronic health problems. Orders, coordinates care, interprets tests, treatments, and therapies within the scope of practice for pre or post transplant recipients. Overview The Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) in Cardiovascular Surgery plays an integral role in the comprehensive care of adult cardiothoracic surgical patients. This provider works collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, intensivists, nursing staff, and multidisciplinary teams to deliver high‑quality perioperative care. Responsibilities include inpatient rounding, first assisting in the operating room, managing pre‑ and postoperative patients, and participating in call coverage. Overview: Serve as first assist in cardiovascular surgical procedures, including CABG, valve surgery, aortic procedures, and other cardiothoracic operations. Perform surgical tasks such as vein harvesting, suturing, retraction, cannulation assistance, and hemostasis. Support preoperative preparation and postoperative handoff to ICU teams. Perform daily rounds on postoperative and step‑down patients. Manage routine and complex postoperative issues, including hemodynamic monitoring, chest tube management, wound care, and medication adjustments. Order and interpret diagnostic tests, labs, imaging, and consults. Coordinate patient care with nursing, case management, rehabilitation, and other specialties.
