Job Description

The Certified Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant creates a safe environment for patients, saves lives when necessary, provides hope, empowers patients, and teaches new tools for coping to patients. The Certified Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant provides direct patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse. Primary responsibilities include the provision of a safe and therapeutic milieu, crisis intervention, individual/family education groups and activities of daily living.


Qualifications

Job Requirements

Education: High school diploma/equivalent and formal nursing or medical assistant training program required. (2) years work experience with the psychiatric patient population highly preferred.

Licensure/Certification: State Nurse Aide certification preferred.

Knowledge: Knowledge of psychiatric group processes, therapeutic relationships processes, age specific growth and development, limit setting and behavior management, crisis management with aggressive behaviors, and CPR training preferred.

This unit is uniquely designed for individuals whose behavioral health challenges, combined with acute or chronic medical diagnoses, make them difficult to place in traditional psychiatric or medical settings. Patients on the IMAP unit may present with a wide range of medical concerns, including post-surgical recovery, cardiac abnormalities, sepsis, wound care, or other acute conditions—while also experiencing psychiatric diagnoses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or severe depression. The unit's structure allows for close medical monitoring while simultaneously addressing behavioral health needs through a multidisciplinary team approach. With a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4 / 1:5 and a CNA ratio of 1:6, the unit is staffed to support safe, effective, and compassionate care. The team on 5A delivers respectful, patient-centered care to individuals with complex access and care needs, and works collaboratively with internal medicine, psychiatry, and social work to ensure holistic treatment.
