Surgical Technologist - Operatring Room (Full Time, 40, Varied Shifts)

RESPONSIBILITIES Review Date: 07/23 Effective Date: 09/20 I. JOB SUMMARY/RESPONSIBILITIES: • Within scope of work, assists in the planning, assessment, implementation and evaluation of patient care as a member of the patient care team in department. • Scrubs, assists and anticipates the needs of physicians during a wide variety of surgical procedures with the supervision of a staff nurse. • Depending upon area of assignment, performs procedural, operative and diagnostic procedures with supervision of a Registered Nurse. II. TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: • Essential: standing, walking, stooping/bending, twisting body, finger dexterity, seeing, hearing, speaking, lifting usual amount of 35 lbs, pushing/pulling usual amount of 50 pounds of force, carrying usual amount of 35 lbs, reaching above/at/below shoulder, repetitive arm/hand motions, static/frequent gripping of an object for prolonged periods. • As required, operates sterilizers, drills, saws, microscopes, surgical tables, and various other surgical equipment/instrumentation. III. TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: • Not substantially subjected to adverse environmental conditions. • Subject to noise and/or vibration, hazardous physical conditions and atmospheric conditions which affect the respiratory system or the skin. IV. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE: • Completion of a certified Surgical Technologist, Operating Room Technician or comparable training program; or three (3) years experience as an OR Technician or Surgical Technologist in an acute care or outpatient setting. • Association of Surgical Technologists Certification preferred. • Current certification in BLS/HCP. Surgical Technologist - Surgical Services (Big Island, Full-Time, 40) - Multiple Openings!

RESPONSIBILITIES I. JOB SUMMARY/RESPONSIBILITIES: • Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager or designee, performs assigned surgical “scrub” duties and maintains sterile techniques for all surgical procedures. • Prepares the patient, operating room, equipment, and instruments for surgery, maintaining aseptic techniques in accordance with nursing practice and standards of care. • May be responsible for the assessment, treatment, or care of patients of all ages. Must be competent in the interpretations of the patient’s self-report or behavior and the information must be interpreted with an understanding of the cognitive, physical, emotional, & chronological maturtion process. Treatment should be individualized & reflect an understanding of the developmental needs & range of treatment for each patient. II. TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: • Seeing, hearing, speaking, finger dexterity. • Constant: static/frequent gripping of an object for prolonged periods, repetitive arm/hand motions. • Frequent: standing, walking, stooping/bending, twisting body, lifting usual amount of 35 pounds up to 50 pounds, carrying usual amount of 35 pounds, pushing/pulling usual amount of 50 pounds of force, reach above/at/below shoulder. III. TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: • Not substantially subjected to adverse environmental conditions. • Exposed to chemicals, body fluids, communicable diseases. • Required Personal Protective Equipment: Eye protection, gown, mask, mask with face shield, non-sterile/sterile medical gloves, CAPR. • Must be able to adjust schedule for “on-call” coverage involving, but not limited to, evenings, night, weekends and holidays. IV. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A. EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE: • Completion of a certified Surgical Technologist, Operating Room Technician or comparable training program; or three (3) years experience as an OR Technician or Surgical Technologist in an acute care or outpatient setting. • Association of Surgical Technologists Certification preferred. • Current BLS certification. B. EXPERIENCE: • Experience to demonstrate: o Strong organizational and self-motivational skills. o Ability to deal with patients/visitors tactfully and courteously. o Ability to work and maintain composure under constantly changing situations with numerous interruptions. SCOPE OF SERVICE Operating Room (OR) – Cases scheduled 0645 to 1730 Monday through Friday which consists of 5 operating rooms. Services are provided to patients of all ages, 1 year of age to adult requiring major or minor surgical specialty services – Cardiovascular, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, Gastroenterology.
