Job Title: School Nurse - RN Contract Length: 192 days FLSA Status: Exempt Job Summary Position is responsible for providing health care services to students and staff within the professional scope of practice as defined by the division and the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) guidelines. Essential Duties To perform this job successfully, an individual must satisfactorily perform each essential duty. Plans the school health program, in cooperation with the appropriate medical authority and administrative school personnel. Participates in medical examinations and develops a plan for student care based on assessment, intervention, implementation, outcome, and evaluation of care. Works with doctors, parents, and staff regarding student needs. Cooperates with school personnel to identify and meet students' social and physical needs. Works with community agencies to plan facilities that meet the needs of students outside of school. Promotes a healthy school environment through Health Education to students, families, and groups to achieve optimal levels of wellness. Assesses injuries and illnesses. Administer first aid and treat minor injuries and mild to acute sickness. Notifies parents regarding illness or injury; approves early dismissal for health reasons and provides supervision for sick or injured students until they are placed in their parents' care. Maintains a file of emergency contacts and phone numbers. Documents all data pertinent to the student's health and maintains student health records. Preserves the confidentiality of records and information. Administers medications and assists the School Health Coordinator with training medication designees; prepares medications and packs them for the medication designee to administer during field trips. Administers immunizations and maintains records for each student; notifies parents/guardians regarding immunization requirements and/or missing immunizations. Administers health screenings (vision and hearing). Submits accurate and timely reports as required by the division and the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). Provides parents with school health forms so that the family physician's findings or other pertinent health data can be reported to the school. Prepares a list of students with specific health problems that may require modifications to physical activities or seating arrangements in the classroom. Assists in programs for the care of disabled children. Documents and files accident reports. Establish nursing policies to meet emergencies. Reports significant student injuries, accidents, and illness trends to the Principal. Monitors student attendance and reports incidents of extended or illegal absence to the school administration. Makes telephone calls to determine the reason for absence. Assists the Principal in preparing the school health budget. Orders, inventories, and oversees the storage of first aid and related health supplies and equipment. Requisition building equipment and supplies as needed for the Principal. Attends meetings with the school administrators when required. Consults with the attendance teacher and staff members regarding a variety of health factors related to absences and communicable diseases. Works with cafeteria staff to ensure that all students with food allergies receive appropriate meals while in school. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Possession of a valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Virginia. At least one (1) year of supervised nursing experience in community or child health. Possess and maintain current certifications in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid from a recognized provider (e.g., American Heart Association). A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in nursing, public health nursing, or other nursing programs is preferred. Work toward (and subsequently maintain) a certification in school nursing, community health/public health nursing, family nurse practitioner, or pediatric/school nurse practitioner from a nationally recognized professional nursing organization is preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of nursing processes and practices. Ability to perform effectively in emergencies. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public. Working Conditions and Physical Requirements Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone and enter data into a computer; see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in person, outdoors, and on the phone; physical agility to lift to 25 pounds; and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk, and reach overhead. Work Environment The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Duties are usually performed in a school/clinic environment. Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
