Advanced Practice Provider-Colorectal

Department Overview The Division of Gastrointestinal and General Surgery is a comprehensive team of surgeons focused on the areas of colorectal surgery, esophageal surgery, hernia surgery, treatment of pancreatic cancer and surgical nutrition. Our general surgeons support numerous clinical research trials and actively partner with scientists in the community to develop innovative surgical devices. The general surgery division also encompasses one of the largest residency programs in the country, as well as fellowships in minimally invasive surgery and colorectal surgery. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is an Instructor credentialed and privileged as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) (in a respective Specialty area; i.e., Nurse Practitioner (NP), Certified Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM), Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)). The APP is a member of the OHSU Professional Staff practicing in accordance with the respective bylaws. The APP shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service. The APP is expected to comply with scope of practice, other laws, regulations, OHSU policy, and other applicable professional standards of practice. The Advanced Practice Provider (APN or NP) will work in collaboration with the colorectal surgeons to staff the outpatient colorectal surgery practice. The Instructor is supported by the colorectal surgeons and the Chief of GI and General Surgery. Function/Duties of Position The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a key member of a multi-disciplinary patient care team, which includes physicians who represent both medical and surgical disciplines, residents, nurses, dieticians, and other clinical and business support staff. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) provides direct advanced practice nursing care for patients. S/he assesses patient and family needs both pre- operatively as well as post- operatively, develops a plan of care, implements and evaluates the care delivered. The Nurse Practitioner serves as key communication link between the referring providers, patient, his/her family, and the care team. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a continuous advocate for patients and their families. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) practices in accord with professional standards, core values, and with a commitment to service excellence. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) reports to the center manager of the Digestive Health Center (DHC), supports the foregut surgeons, and has a collegial relationship with the health care providers and staff within the DHC. Clinical Responsibilities Provides patient care in the outpatient area for pre-operative and postoperative care, stoma care, and chronic follow-up as determined by the attending physicians. This includes, but is not limited to: reviewing outside records, completing full new patient H&Ps, and developing patient care plans with the surgeons for patients with colorectal diseases. Responsible for ordering appropriate diagnostic studies and coordination of care with both inside and outside OHSU facilities. Must document patient care in a clear and concise manner within EPIC. Provides procedures including High Resolution Anoscopy and any anoscopic procedures in the clinic. The colorectal practice currently has four busy providers with multiple other clinical duties in other health systems including the VA and Adventist. A functional and robust HRA program at OHSU would need the additional support of another clinical provider met by the APP that would best fit the need for our colorectal practice. This model of care has been successful in other similar health systems. We further propose that HRA service be offered to all at risk groups for anal cancer including patients living with HIV and other immucompromized hosts, such as the transplant patients. Provides same day response to medical advice/prescription phone requests and coordinating patient services with outpatient staff and other departmental staff. Ability to recognize emergency or urgent situations and acting immediately and effectively to provide emergency resuscitation and/or treatment. Patient education: Responsible for all pre-op patient education with patients and families both in the clinic and via phone encounters. Education: Collaborates in education with residents, fellows, and medical students related to colorectal surgery and care. Will be a valued member of colorectal service conferences and meetings. Provides communication to both internal and external customers (patients, referring providers, insurance carriers, internal providers, and other OHSU faculty and staff) that meets or exceeds the service standards for the health care industry. This duty includes prompt and professional communication efforts, face-to-face customer contact skills, crisis management, use of available information technology, standard complaint processing, flexibility in coverage of internal service needs, and continuous application of process improvement methods and skills. Seeing up to 12 patients per day, this APP provides care in conjunction with a team comprised of physicians, APPs, RN coordinators, and other allied health professionals. Position Highlights $44.31-$54.28/hour DOE with the ability to go higher for highly experienced candidates As a Registered Nurse, you will have the opportunity to: Provide comprehensive care during patient visits, discuss chief complaints, obtain vital signs, complete health history, and document health information in the EMR system Conduct phone triage to assess patient needs and coordinate follow-up care Assist with diagnostic procedures and treatments, including IV starts when ordered, while educating patients on procedures and medications Collaborate with the healthcare team to develop and implement patient care plans, coordinate referrals, and provide education to patients on medications and potential side effects Qualifications: Associate's Degree or higher in Nursing Oregon State RN license. Dual licensure in Washington and Oregon is required within 120 days of hire. If an RN license is in a participating Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state, the following requirements apply: Must submit proof of license in state of residence. Must submit proof of completion for the required suicide prevention training during 1st week of onboarding. If relocating to Washington State, must obtain WA RN license within 6 months of hire. Must update the primary state of residence within 60 days (applies to anyone relocating to Washington State). Military Nurses are not required to obtain a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) BCLS certification within 90 days of hire; ACLS & PALS are preferred Skills: Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred (level 10 to receive bilingual differential pay) Training in Early Periodic Screening & Development Testing and Women's Health Exams is preferred Proficient in professional nursing concepts and procedures, medication uses, and effects Strong verbal, written, and listening communication skills Ability to prioritize and multitask effectively, handling interruptions Skilled at interacting professionally with patients, families, and colleagues Able to assess and respond to diverse patient needs across all age groups Basic proficiency in Word, Excel, and EMR programs Our mission celebrates diversity.
