Responsibilities
- The RN - Outpatient Dialysis provides quality care for ESRD patients requiring maintenance hemodialysis treatments in both acute and non-acute settings utilizing the nursing process.
- Initiation of dialysis treatment on patients with: AV fistulas, including cannulation; AV grafts, including cannulation; dual lumen catheters.
- Continuously monitors and interprets vital signs in conjunction with the dialysis procedure and treats complications as they arise according to the physician or policy guidelines.
- Administers medications to patients accurately and in a timely manner.
- Maintains a safe environment in accordance with hospital policies and regulatory agencies.
- Identifies and assesses renal patients on admission and discharge to the dialysis unit, i.e., assessment of breath sounds; assessment of cardiac sounds; assessment of fluid overload; weights of patient.
- Implements, documents, and monitors plan of care during dialysis procedure for each assigned patient.
- Assists with the delivery of care to patients other than assigned patients as designated.
- Maintains adequate communication between the hemodialysis department, patients, physicians, floor nursing staff, other hospital departments, and outpatient dialysis facilities.
- Gives relevant, objective reports of patients’ reactions to hemodialysis to physicians and other health care team members as indicated.
- Keeps proper documentation on specific hemodialysis records.
- Shows increasing understanding of group dynamics and is able to charge responsibilities in hemodialysis when necessary.
- Provides a safe and therapeutic environment for his/her patient not only with equipment, but in areas of infection control as well.
- Practices BSI precautions.
Qualifications
Job Requirements:
Associate’s degree in Nursing.
Current valid NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License.
BLS certification must be obtained within 14 days of hire or transfer into the role and prior to providing direct patient care.
Prior Hemodialysis experience.
Knowledge of infection control guidelines and specific aseptic techniques required in a hemodialysis unit.
Knowledge of dialysis equipment with accurate interpretation and proper intervention of alarm conditions
Preferred Job Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
Prior Critical Care experience.
Rate of pay is determined based on experience and education, and may include other pay components such as differentials and call pay based on role.
