We are hiring a Medical Assistant (part-time/20hrs) to join UTHealth Houston School of Public Health in El Paso, Tx. Daily tasks in this role include patient registration/check-in, verifiying all registration documents are up-to-date, answering phone calls, reviewing faxes, collecting patient payments, completing insurance prior authorization requests, appealing denied insurance prior authorizations, requesting medical records from other healthcare providers/services, answering/addressing patient portal questions/concerns, performing vital signs and recording in the electronic health record (EHR), uploading patient documents to the EHR, preparing the charts of upcoming appointments, scheduling/re-scheduling patient appointments, other duties as assigned by the healthcare provider. Ideal candidate for this position should have some experience as a Medical Assistant and working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Bilingual in Spanish is preferred.

Position Summary:

Provides trained paramedical support in administering health care services.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  • Directs the patient to the examination room.
  • Conducts the initial screening of occupational medicine patients which involves audiometric testing, keystone machine eye testing, electrocardiogram testing, vital signs, height and weight, spyrometer testing, and preparation of reporting forms.
  • Reviews patient health history through a personal interview with the patient.
  • Assists physicians with examinations.
  • Schedules patient appoints and tests.
  • Performs triage to determine patient needs.
  • Orders and stocks needed clinic supplies.  Maintains and schedules repair of diagnostic testing equipment.
  • Relieves, as needed, the reception area.
  • Responds to emergency situations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

  • Use and care of standard clinic equipment.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) by American Heart Association (AHA) required
  • EPIC Patient/Billing Portal
  • Bilingual in Spanish, preferred. 
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, preferred. 

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.  

  • Completion of an approved Medical Assistant training program preferred

Minimum Experience:

  • Six months experience or completion of an approved Medical Assistant Training Program. 

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.

What you will do in this role: · You will prepare patients for examination and treatment by taking patient histories and vital signs · You will prepare exam and treatment rooms with the necessary instruments for your patients including preparation and maintenance of supplies and equipment for treatments, including sterilization · You will give injections and assist with lab testing and phlebotomy · You will assist physicians in preparing for minor surgeries and physicals · You will answer telephone calls to the practice and screens for referral What Qualifications you will need: · Graduation from an accredited Medical Assisting program OR twelve months of direct clinical patient care experience in a healthcare setting OR current Medical Assistant certification · Candidates with one year of Medical work experience who do not possess Medical Assistant Certification must obtain Certification within one year of hire date · Medical Assistants who recently graduated from a Medical Assisting training program will obtain a clinical MA certification within 60 days of employment · Active and unrevoked RMA, CCMA, CMA, NCMA, or NCRMA certification/ABR-OE credentials is highly preferred Supporting HCA Healthcares 186 hospitals and 2,400+ sites of care, Physician Services plays a crucial role as the main entry point for patients looking for high-quality healthcare within the HCA Healthcare system.
