Registered Nurse First Assist - Surgery and WP

MAIN FUNCTION:

Under supervision and direction of the operating surgeon, functions during the assistant role until

conclusion of the operative procedure. Does not concurrently function as scrub nurse. When not

working as a RNFA, works as scrub or circulating nurse as directed.

MUST HAVE REQUIREMENTS:

• Active RN license in the state of Ohio
• A BSN is required for those who have not been practicing as a RNFA prior to 1/1/2020
• CNOR certification
• Successful completion of RNFA program that meets AORN standards for RN first assistant education program
• Maintain a current AHA (American Heart Association) Healthcare Provider BLS and ACLS card
• Must obtain and maintain Medical Staff credentialing
• CRNFA certification completion and maintenance is PREFERRED

     Must be able to respond to the hospital within 30 MINUTES

or be willing to stay on site while on call.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

1. Applies principles of asepsis technique according to standards.
2. Follows infection control according to current guidelines.
3. Recognizes safety hazards and initiates appropriate corrective action.
4. Applies knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, and operative technique relative to patient care wherein RNFA assists.
5. Performs positioning, prepping, and draping of patient.
6. Provides hemostasis by clamping blood vessels, coagulating bleeding points, ligating vessels,

and by other means as directed by the surgeon

7. Provides exposure through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning, and sponging

techniques.

8. Handles tissue as directed by the surgeon during the operative procedure.
9. Performs wound closure as directed by the surgeon, sutures the peritoneum, fascia,

subcutaneous tissue and skin.

10. Applies surgical dressings.
11. Assists with transferring the patient from the operating room.
12. Practices within limitations of preparation and experience
13. Maintains continuing education relative to practice.
14. Verifies correct sponge, tape, needle, and instrument count with other nursing personnel in room.
15. Labels specimens properly and takes to area for transfer to Lab.

GENERAL RN MAIN FUNCTION:

Provides nursing care to patients in an efficient, professional, compassionate, and caring manner.

Directs the activities of paraprofessional as they provide care. Responsible for assuring effective.

communication with patients, support persons and members of the healthcare team. Responsible for

implementing nursing care of assigned patients via the Nursing Process including assessment,

diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Acts in compliance with hospital, Nursing Department policies/procedures and the Nurse Practice Act of the State of Ohio. Follows WCH

Nursing Philosophy and practice model which are derived from the Synergy model and appropriate service standards as outlined in Employee Handbook.

Operations

1. Maintains appropriate clinical skills:
   1. Administers care according to WCH/unit policy/procedure, current standards of care and Ohio Nurse Practice Act.
   2. Performs assessments/reassessments and documentation relevant to patient's condition, needs and age, per nursing documentation guidelines. Communicates changes in patient condition to physician in timely manner and suggests possible interventions and course of care as appropriate in a collaborative manner.
   3. Initiates, evaluates, and reviews plan of care.
   4. Provides age-appropriate health teaching related to diagnosis, identified patient/family needs and medication, using available teaching resources and assuring patient family understanding by teach back.
2. Administers medication safely:
   1. Correctly demonstrates use of CPOE(Computer Physician Order Entry)
   2. Demonstrates knowledge of drug purpose and effectiveness as related to diagnosis.
   3. Follows 6 rights of medication administration.
   4. Demonstrates appropriate/safe medication handling/administration.
   5. Reassesses and documents effectiveness of medication.
3. Assures team members huddle and round on patients to :
   1. Evaluate the environment to assure safety & infection control standards are met.
   2. Evaluate the care provided to assure it is based on practice standards and evidence-based practice.
   3. Evaluate the educational plan and its implementation, assessing for and addressing gaps in care.
   4. Evaluate for any additional /alternative care needs, and patient/family satisfaction.
   5. Evaluate adherence to nursing practice standards of care and documentation of care by the nurse and team members.
4. Coordinate work to achieve maximum productivity. Able to multitask and prioritize workload. Work habits are consistently adjusted to accommodate multiple responsibilities and are prioritized and completed in a timely manner.

5. Demonstrate reasonable and rational judgment in decision making
