Summary
Following unit-based orientation commensurate with core standards, provides preceptor guided professional nursing services to accomplish the individual patient plan of care. Utilizes the nursing process to care for patients with subtle and sometimes unidentified needs consistently, safely, therapeutically, and efficiently. Supports the operations of the Alaska Native Medical Center (ANMC) and programs.
Responsibilities
Use nursing education to collect patient health data, analyze the data to determine diagnoses, identify expected outcomes individualized to the patient, develop a plan of care that prescribes interventions to attain the expected outcomes, implement the interventions identified in the plan of care, and evaluate the patient’s progress toward attainment of the outcomes, working collaboratively with the healthcare team.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
Evaluates one’s own nursing practice in relation to professional practice standards and relevant statutes and regulations, identifying short and long term professional goals.
Utilizes the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements as the foundation for nursing practice.
Interacts with and contributes to the professional development of peers and others practicing in a Shared Governance model of nursing practice.
Makes decisions and takes actions on behalf of patients are determined in an ethical manner, and care is delivered in a nonjudgmental and nondiscriminatory manner that is sensitive to patient diversity and maintains patient autonomy, dignity, and rights.
Collaborates with the patient, family, and other health care providers in the formation of overall goals and the plan of care, as well as in decisions related to care and the delivery of services.
Considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, evidence based-practice, and cost when planning and delivering patient care. Assists the patient and family in identifying and securing appropriate and available services to address health-related needs.
Delivers timely and effective nursing care according to established standards including physical, social and emotional care.
Performs nursing assessments, interventions, and evaluations.
Delegates tasks and directs the day-to-day activities of Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA's), Patient Care Technicians (PCT’s), and Patient Observers (PO’s).
Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION
- Current temporary permit as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of Alaska.
- Temporary permit is valid for up to 6 months, in which time the employee must pass the NCLEX exam. Employee will notify supervisor of the exam date and will inform supervisor of the outcome immediately upon posting of the results. If unsuccessful, the State of Alaska will revoke the temporary permit and the employee will no longer qualify for the Graduate Nurse position.
- Must be licensed by the State of Alaska as a Registered Nurse within 6 months of hire.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) card required.
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred.
Additional Requirements
- May be required to work outside the traditional work schedule.
- May be called out to work off-shift in emergency situations.
- According to the needs of the organization, some incumbents in this job class may be required to obtain specific technical certifications and programming language skills.
