Christian Health offers a unique opportunity for student nurses to learn valuable skills and gain the confidence necessary to be successful in their nursing careers. The Christian Health Student Nurse Program (SNP) provides an environment that is collaborative and conducive to learning which benefits the patient, the health-care facility, and the nursing profession.

 

Student Nurse Program (SNP) participants are educated in psychiatric mental health adult and geriatric nursing; which includes nursing assessment and interventions; interdisciplinary care planning; psychiatric and mental-health nursing; and critical-thinking skills. Student nurses participate in classroom orientation before being assigned to clinical practice areas. Once in the clinical area, student nurses will continue to receive education from their work experience, attendance at in-services, and participation in a lecture series, designed specifically for SNP participants. Educational topics include therapeutic communication, suicide risk and interventions, managing medical conditions, fall prevention, individualized interventions/reduction in targeted behaviors and evidence based care for patients with dementia. 

 

About Ramapo Ridge Behavioral Health (RRBH):

  • RRBH is a 58-bed inpatient psychiatric hospital licensed by the State of New Jersey and accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC).
  • Our behavioral hospital serves adults from 18 years of age through the senior years. RRBH includes a general adult psychiatric division treating adults of all ages with various mental health diagnosis such as depression, bipolar illness, anxiety, schizophrenia, OCD and others. Our geriatric division is a locked, safe and secure newly renovated wing that specializes in various forms of Dementia, Alzheimer’s and a host of additional mental health diagnosis.  While we admit patients who are voluntary and involuntary, we are not licensed to admit patients who require Short Term Care Facility (STCF) beds. Generally, these patients require a more intensive and secure environment for safety.

About Haven:

  • Haven at Ramapo Ridge provides inpatient trauma-informed care and services in a safe and secure setting for women only. Located within Ramapo Ridge Behavioral Health. 
  • Haven is the first of its kind in Bergen County and the only inpatient women’s program in New Jersey. The program offers a wide range of trauma care support and services and patients receive personalized care plans that lay out a path to healing in a safe space separate from the hospital’s general population.
  • Received the “Clinical Excellence Award” from the New Jersey Hospital Association (NJHA) for our innovative Haven program, which recognizes caregivers who personify a top-notch commitment to care.

Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, student nurses provide direct patient care to their assigned patients. Student nurses assume responsibility and accountability for patient care as a team member, implement interventions, and assist patients in achieving positive outcomes. Through this program, student nurses, who are paid, have the opportunity to apply newly acquired knowledge and skills in the day-to-day practice of nursing.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Performing data collection and documentation of vital signs, weight, and intake and output.
  • Performing EKGs and blood-glucose checks.
  • Providing assistance with activities of daily living i.e. hygienic care, ambulation, meals, and nutrition.
  • Ensuring a safe patient environment by observing the patient and environment for any potential or actual safety concerns, i.e. answering call lights promptly and responding to fall risk.
  • Observing for any changes in behavior, mood, or ability.
  • Collaborating with the registered nurse on any needed updates to the nursing care/treatment plan relative to observed and reported information regarding patient status or condition.
  • Providing relevant patient/family education under the supervision of the Registered Nurse.

 

Scheduling requirements:

  • 7am-3pm, required to work a minimum of Three days per week and Every Other Weekend rotation during the summer.
  • During the academic year, SNP participants will be offered a flexible schedule.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

Education and skills required:

  • Must be enrolled in a accredited program in Nursing.
  • Successful completion of a competency skills checklist.
  • Participation in evaluation sessions (written and verbal) upon completion of the SNP.
  • Attendance at De-escalation training.

Performs and records patient’s vital signs, such as blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respirations, pulse oximetry and pain rating. Documents clinical data as assigned, in a computer or manual system. Performs clinical procedures, such as specimen collection, venipuncture, EKG, application of sequential compression sleeves, post-mortem care, maintenance of skin integrity and capillary blood glucose monitoring. Sets up for selected procedures and assists RN's accordingly. Assists patient with activities of daily living, such as feeding, bathing, and/or toileting. Orients patients to Specialty Service/Unit environment. Assists patient with ambulation and all levels of mobilization. Assists with dietary functions, including delivering and collecting patient trays at bedside, passing menus to patients and assisting them with menu completion, mixing nutritional supplements, reporting variation in eating patterns to RN/Dietitian. Maintains accurate and timely systems for transmission of patient dietary orders and changes. Assists in pre- and post-operative procedures, such as patient transport, completion of pre-op checklist and reception of patient from PACU/OR. Utilizes measures to insure patient safety and promotes a restraint free environment. Maintains use of restraints for patients under the direction of a RN and according to set policies and procedures. Provides care to the deceased as well as the involved family/significant other. Assists the professional registered nurse in the collaborative plan for patient education participating in patient/teaching activities. Maintains a safe, clean and functional environment, including ensuring for the comfortable movement of the patient. Assists the patient in room maintenance, such as bed-stripping and trash removed, when necessary. Performs one-to-one observation of patients on constant observation status, e.g., for safety, elopement, or suicide prevention. Performs correct infection control techniques and maintains isolation status for patients under direction of a RN and according to set procedures. Performs One-to-One/Constant Observation and Safety Observations of patients as ordered, e.g., for safety, elopement, or suicide prevention. Transports patients to stretchers or wheelchairs, as required. Operates the pneumatic tube system when required. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Requirements: Education: High School Diploma / Associate Degree. BLS from American Heart Association required. Completion of the first clinical year in an accredited baccalaureate program in Nursing, with experience in a medical surgical rotation. Grade point average of 3.5 or above. Satisfactory nursing faculty recommendations.
