Position Summary
The Staff Nurse I provides direct patient care and takes the initiative to improve patient outcomes by integrating Shared Leadership, Evidence Based Practice, Relationship Based Care, and standards of nursing excellence into clinical practice. This position integrates professional practice model, current standards of practice and clinical experience to provide "quality" patient care as measured by established nursing quality standards and other governing/accrediting health care bodies. The Staff Nurse I engages and obtains information from patient and/or family to advocate for the patient, develops an appropriate patient educational plan, and responds to patient's changing needs while sharing information and collaborating with other members of the health care team to promote effective patient care. The Staff Nurse I participates in organizational, departmental, and shared leadership activities; supports department and unit goals in daily behavior.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develops, implements, and updates the patient’s plan of care based on on-going assessment of the patient and input from the patient’s family.
  • Shares information and collaborates with other members of the health care team to promote effective patient care.
  • Verifies and implements orders from physician, physician assistant and/or advance practice nurse by performing interventions as prescribed by the provider and documenting accurately in the electronic medical record.
  • Engages and obtains information from patient and/or family to develop an appropriate patient educational plan.
  • Recognizes symptoms, establishes priorities, and responds to patient’s changing needs.
  • Engages support personnel by delegating appropriate tasks per the Illinois State Nurse Practice Act and provides support and feedback.
  • Advocates for patients, families, and their significant others, the community, and the nursing profession.
  • Integrates theoretical knowledge, evidence-based research, current standards of practice and clinical experience to provide “quality” patient care as measured by established nursing quality standards and other governing/accrediting health care bodies.
  • Assumes role of Charge Nurse when assigned, utilizing appropriate resources and tools.
  • Collaborates with other nurses to identify, promote, and provide positive learning experiences for staff and students.
  • Serves as preceptor and/or resource to other nursing, support staff and students.
  • Takes responsibility for continued professional growth/development by identification of learning needs and initiates strategies to meet such needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

    JOB SUMMARY Responsible to provide direct nursing care to the customer, and to supervise the day-to- day nursing activities performed by the nursing assistants. Report all concerns, complaints made by the customer or their family to the Administrator. Counsel/discipline nursing personnel as requested or as necessary. Make daily rounds to ensure nursing personnel are performing required duties, and to ensure appropriate procedures are being followed. Make physical rounds to all customers daily. Chart nurses’ notes in an informative and descriptive manner that reflects the care provided to the customer, as well as the customer’s response to the care. Complete required assessments upon the customer’s admission, transfer, and/or discharge. Receive telephone orders from physicians and record on the Physicians’ Order Form and P.O.S. Record new/changed diet orders. Forward information to the Dietary Department. Perform routine charting duties as required and in accordance with our established Charting and Documentation Policies and Procedures. Responsible for completion of admission, discharge, and transfer processes. Prepare and administer medications and treatments if appropriate as ordered by the physician. Review medication record for completeness of information, accuracy in the transcription of the physician’s order, and adherence to stop order policies. Administer professional services such as: catheterization, tube feedings, suction, applying and changing dressings/bandages, packs, colostomy, and drainage bags, care of the dead/dying, etc., as required. Participate in the orientation of new customers/family members to the facility. Arrange for diagnostic and therapeutic services, as ordered by the physician. Notify the customer’s attending physician and family when there is a change in the customer’s conditions. Obtain sputum, urine and other lab tests as ordered. Take and record TPR’s, blood pressures, accuchecks, etc., as necessary. Contact the customer’s physician for: Nursing assessment of change of condition. Medication orders or charges. To inform of incidents. To report abnormal results of Lab and X-ray. Anything else pertinent to the customers’ care and well-being. Ensure the nurses’ notes and monthly summaries reflect the care plan and is being followed. Attend staff meetings, etc., as directed. Perform other related duties as assigned.
