Essential Responsibilities

1. Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations. 2. Ensures that safe, high-quality patient care is provided in compliance with federal, state and local regulatory requirements and processional standards (ASPAN, The Joint Commission). 3. Provides direct patient care as needed; provides break, lunch and backup for staff as needed. 4. Works with designated educator to ensure all levels of nursing skills and competencies are met. 5. Assists with managing and controlling department expenditures within established budgets. 6. Supports and enforces infection-control policies and procedures. 7. Monitors department specific standards of care/practice. 8. Assists with the development of nursing process improvement projects and communicates resultant data in conjunction with the Unit Based Councils (BC). 9.In coordination with leadership, supports the surgical services goals and daily clinical operations, including practice standards, overall room activity, staffing, budgets, fiscal management, and quality improvement. 10. Supervises all assigned staff to include hiring, orienting, training, evaluating and coaching; escalates employee performance concerns to leadership and provides documentation for counseling and performance improvement plans (PIPs) as necessary. 11. Develops and implements action plans in collaboration with leadership to improve staff development. 12.Facilitates availability of necessary equipment, material resources, and needed supplies on a daily and/or case by case basis. 13. Completes daily assessment to ensure patient care equipment is working accurately without defect; places work orders, when necessary, with subsequent timely follow-up to maintain quality controls (e.g. Crash Cart check, blood glucose machine, medication refrigerators, eye-wash stations, etc.). 14. Facilitates multidisciplinary patient care planning and rounds with staff members, patients, family to evaluate care and services. 15. Sets priorities appropriate to daily patient/physician dynamics ensuring optimal staff time management, patient flow, case start times and case turnovers. 16. Maintains communication and resolves issues regarding shift activities. 17. Retains clinical skills for patient care including the initiation of IV therapy where needed. 18. Collaborates with staff regarding necessary physician notification. 19. Effectively promotes and maintains the shared governance model. 20. Responsible for investigating and resolving any patient, family or physician concerns/complaints consistent with organization-wide expectations; knowing when to engage the chain of command, if applicable. 21. Responsible for medication barcoding compliance and monitoring staff for compliance, if applicable. 22. Responsible in developing, implementing, and maintaining increased case volume and surgeon satisfaction programs, if applicable. 23. Identifies and coordinates the needs of surgical services physicians through formal and informal meetings. 24. Responsible for ensuring preference cards are developed and maintained, if applicable. 25. Oversees operating/procedure schedule time compliance; controls the turnover time process through oversight and use of case time and case turnover reports, if applicable. 26. Assists leadership with timekeeping and payroll functions for staff; assists staff with timekeeping corrections as needed per policy. 27. Participates in creation of monthly schedule and ensures schedules are completed in a timely fashion with staffing balance to meet volume needs, skill levels, and ratios. 28. Works with designated educator to ensure all levels of nursing skills and competencies are met. 29. Concurrent monitoring and auditing of electronic and computer systems for compliance and correction with appropriate staff member. 30. Ensures staff compliance with required certifications. 31. Monitors cleanliness and appearance of the department and appropriately escalates with work orders to address gaps in expectations. 32. Performs other duties as assigned.
