Telemetry Medicine/Surgical Oncology (9 East) Nurses on this unit obtain an Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Chemotherapy Provider credential and administer chemotherapy to inpatients. 9A is an innovative unit. Trying new things and developing new processes allow staff to work at the highest level of licensure and certification.

Telemetry Medicine (9 West): Since June of 2020, 9A has been caring for COVID-19 patients and we excel in high acuity medical protocols that were developed during the COVID-19 pandemic. 9A is often seen as a pipeline to critical care, the Emergency Department, and other departments within the hospital due to the unique skills learned while caring for 9A patients. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:5 patient ratio and our CNA-to-patient ratio is 1:12 most days.

Job Summary

Under general supervision, the professional nurse adheres to the American Nurses Association (ANA) standards of professional nursing and performance, and the ANA Code of Ethics to provide care to all patients. Applies critical thinking, evidence-based policies, procedures, guidelines and competence to collaborate with the healthcare team to promote excellence in patient safety and quality outcomes. Utilizes the Theory of Human Caring and Caritas in daily practice. "Jean Watson, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAN, Founder / Director, Watson Caring Science Institute" We understand the support needed for a new nurse to be successful. With this in mind, we offer a 12-month Nurse Residency Program that provides monthly education classes and hands-on clinical experiences, designed to ease the transition from student to practicing professional nurse. Our program builds on the knowledge and skills acquired in nursing education programs.

Essential Functions:
  • Learn and execute all job functions as performed by a fully credentialled RN (50%)
  • Monitor, record and report symptoms and changes in patient’s condition and vital signs (5%)
  • Develop and modify patient care plans as indicated by patient’s responses and conditions (5%)
  • Modify patient treatment plans as indicated by patient’s responses and conditions (5%)
  • Consult and coordinate with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care (5%)
  • Monitor all aspects of patient care, including diet and physical activity (5%)
  • Prepare patients for, and assist with examinations and treatments (5%)
  • Assess the needs of individuals, families and/or communities to identify potential health or safety problems (5%)
  • Instruct individuals and families on health education and disease prevention and after care (5%)
  • Administer nursing care to ill, injured, convalescent or disabled patients (5%)
  • Medication administration, documentation and reassessment (5%)

Education:
  • Associate's Degree Nursing Required

Work Experience:

    Licenses:
    • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association or American Red Cross Required
    • RN-Registered Nurse - DORA - Department of Regulatory Agencies Required

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • This program is offered those with no previous RN experience.
    • Knowledge of techniques, methods and competencies of clinical nursing practices. Knowledge of safety principles and infection control in the patient care environment.
    • Knowledge of standards, policies and procedures of Denver Health as they pertain to nursing.
    • Skill to properly use medical instruments and laboratory equipment.
    • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form.
    • Ability to apply nursing principles, practices and techniques.
    • Ability to assess patients’ needs and coordinate proper nursing care. Ability to respond appropriately to emergency situations.
    • Ability to use computers and computer systems. Bilingual skills preferred.
    • Microsoft Office Suite required.
    • EPIC documentation preferred.
