Surgical Technologist at Baylor Scott & White Surgicare Waxahachie:

The Certified Technologist scrubs for surgical procedures and demonstrates competence while functioning as a member of the surgical team. Maintains a sterile field during surgical procedures. Prepares supplies, instruments, and equipment related to these procedures. Supports the philosophy, objectives, and goals of the Surgery Center. Supports and participates in quality improvement activities.

Qualifications:

High School Diploma/GED; completion of a Surgical Technician Program and/or equivalent combination of education and experience
Certification as required by state
Previous experience in an ambulatory surgical center is strongly preferred
Must possess a strong knowledge of surgical procedures and management of the surgical patient
Understanding of aseptic techniques and their implementation
Ability to quickly adapt to changing condition of the patient when needed
Must excel in teamwork and possess strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with staff, engage with patients, and coordinate with physicians

The Surgical Technologist and/or the Certified Surgical Technologist prepares the room and gathers supplies needed for surgical procedures; delivers instruments and supplies to the surgeon and other members of the surgical team intra operatively; may function as second assistant to the surgeon; assists in the proper decontamination of the room, supplies and instruments post operatively. Responsibilities And Duties: 40% Prepares for surgical cases by obtaining and preparing appropriate supplies, equipment and instruments, reviews surgeon's preferences to determine required items. Establishes and maintains a sterile field and presents instruments to the operating team. Delivers appropriate instruments/supplies utilizing proper principles of sterile technique. Acts as 2nd assistant to surgeon, performing duties related to draping and operative site exposure. Responsible for removal of all sharps and initials return card for verification. Can hold extremities. Assist with casting and splinting. Mixes medications on the sterile field once verification by a registered nurse has occurred. Assist with positioning, can fix specimens in formalin (annual competency required), assists circulator in proper care and handling of surgical specimens. Can wash and thaw grafts, can hold a stapler while surgeon fires it, can operate skin stapler for the purpose of wound approximation and can assist with the dislocation of joints if yearly competency is accomplished. Can cut suture material as directed by and under the supervision of a surgeon, Can apply ESU to clamps or forceps for hemostasis under the direct supervision of the surgeon, can assist anesthesia if yearly competency is accomplished, Can assist with patient skin prep if yearly competency is accomplished, Can change out camera and robotic instruments during endoscopic procedures under the direct supervision of the surgeon, Can manipulate the uterus during robotic cases under the direct supervision of the surgeon. 40% Equipment and Supply Maintenance: Assists in post-procedure cleaning of the OR/equipment, returns equipment/supplies to proper areas; assists in room re-stocking. May run dart/biologics for sterilizers (annual competency required), reports any damaged equipment appropriately, mops floor between cases, and ensures that all equipment cords are not frayed and free from cuts as well as other duties as assigned. 20% Unit Operations: Participates in unit operations to contribute to efficiency of department, effective communication, quality care, personal growth as well as development, training, and orientation of new personnel. Hershey Outpatient Surgery Center (HOSC) is currently seeking a dynamic and highly motivated Certified Surgical Technologist to join our team. Eligible for a Sign-on Bonus, up to $5k Service lines include orthopedics, urology, ophthalmology, pain management, ENT, GYN, General Surgery, and Plastic Surgery. Additionally, we perform pediatric surgery on patients ranging in age from 6 months to 17 years of age. The majority of our surgeons are part of the Pennsylvania State Health System, and are all Academic Professors of Medicine in their unique fields, so the right candidate should take a high interest in assisting our attending surgeons in the training of our multiple Fellows, Surgical Residents and Medical Students in an academic teaching environment. The leadership of HOSC believes in advancing a “Just Culture” environment at HOSC where every staff member has a voice, and is always treated with dignity and respect. A major benefit of working for us is a Monday through Friday work week without call, weekends or holidays. The primary hours of operation are 7AM to 5 PM. Picks materials, supplies and equipment for the subsequent day’s cases, and puts away any unused supplies at the end of each day. Works with the team to remove outdated supplies from inventory. Perform terminal cleaning of the surgical suite at the end of each day. Interacts appropriately and effectively with all patients and visitors regardless of age or ethnic background. Uses Standard Universal Precautions, appropriate hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, and safe practices to ensure personal safety and a safe environment. Assists with environmental hazard and infection control surveillance and participates in emergency preparedness drills. Follows all equipment and safety guidelines and is responsible for knowledgeable use and care of equipment. Serves as a resource to other members of the health care team, and is open and willing to train and mentor new staff and surgical residents/medical students. Attends in-services, conferences, and meetings as required. Communicates effectively and courteously with visitors, physicians, and their office staffs, patients, and employees.
