Director of Nursing – Essential Responsibilities

The DON oversees all nursing operations to ensure compliance, quality care, and effective team leadership.

Plan, direct, and supervise nursing staff and daily clinical operations
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
Develop, implement, and update nursing policies and procedures
Maintain appropriate staffing levels to meet resident needs and regulatory standards
Participate in annual Federal, State, and Local surveys
Review and address deficiencies identified during inspections
Manage the Nursing Department within budget guidelines
Conduct annual performance evaluations and provide coaching and education
Administer counseling and disciplinary actions when necessary
Oversee staff training and ongoing education
Ensure adherence to infection control and safety protocols
Report hazardous conditions, equipment issues, and supply needs
Promote resident dignity, comfort, and privacy
Respond promptly and courteously to call lights
Assist with admissions, re‑admissions, and room transfers
Communicate effectively with residents, families, visitors, and staff
Attend departmental meetings and required in‑services

Education, Licensure & Experience

Required:

Graduate of an accredited nursing program
Previous Director of Nursing (DON) or Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) experience

Preferred:

Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) or related field
Minimum 3 years of RN experience
