Overview

The General Internal Medicine (GIM) Lyme Clinic, located in beautiful, rural Lyme, NH, is seeking an individual to join their clinical team as a medical assistant trainee. As a medical assistant trainee, you will begin your role with 12-weeks of paid training through the Dartmouth Health Career Institute (DHCI) where you'll gain the required education and skills to become a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant.

 

Once the training program is successfully completed, your role as a medical assistant (MA) in the GIM Lyme Clinic is vital to the care of our patients. The primary responsibility of the MA in the Lyme Clinic is assisting patients with their clinician visits – this means rooming patients, obtaining vital signs, point of care testing (ear lavage, EKG, urine dip testing, urine pregnancy testing, bladder scanning, and many more), medication/vaccination injections, assisting the clinician with procedures in clinic as well as the keeping up with the general functions of the clinic such as cleaning, stocking supplies and quality and safety reviews. Responsibilities

Training to become a medical assistant for the GIM Lyme Clinic begins with a 12-week program in which you will complete 7 college-level accelerated courses to obtain required health sciences, professional and technical skills education through the Dartmouth Health Career Institute (DHCI). The DHCI classroom is location in Lebanon, NH. Successful trainees then sit for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) Exam administered by the National Heathcareer Association (NHA) and move into the GIM Lyme Clinic as a full-time Medical Assistant Apprentice to complete a 2,000-hour Registered Apprenticeship through the US Department of Labor to gain more skills and competencies with on-the-job training and mentorship.

The GIM Lyme Clinic is located in a rural area, providing preventative, acute and chronic care to a vulnerable population of those age 18 years and older. The Lyme Clinic is a fast-paced clinic, with over 9,000 visits annually. The team is a growing team with highly sought-after clinicians and care team members to support all patient’s needs. The nursing team in clinic consists of two Registered Nurses and 3 Flow Staff (Licensed Nursing Assistant and Medical Assistants). This care team consists of a professional community, working to ensure patient care needs are met: Physicians, Nurses, Social Workers, Medical Assistants (MA), Licensed Nursing Assistants (LNA), Diabetic Educator, Behavioral Health Clinicians, Dietitian, Pharmacist, and Secretaries. The leadership team is very much relationship based, and promotes teamwork, collaboration, effective communication, safe and quality patient care, and a positive environment for all staff and patients. Together this team strongly encourages staff to work at the top of their license scope, providing personal connection and promoting continuity of care to patients and their loved ones close to the patient’s home.  The clinic provides comprehensive care, from vaccines and blood work to a physical or acute exam while open Monday through Friday 0800-1700. This allows for the staffing team to have consistency with their schedule, promote a positive work/life balance, and maximize their time outside of work as well. 

General Medical Assistant Responsibilities:

  • Greets, checks in patients, and notifies appropriate provider. Prepares patient, room and equipment for procedures and exams.
  • Takes and records vital signs. Informs provider of patient vital signs and concerns.
  • Recognizes and treats emergency patients as a priority, assists with patient examinations and treatments.
  • Handles patient situations over the phone, schedules appointments and procedures with medical professionals. Understands limitations in dealing with patients over the phone and involves nursing staff and providers.
  • Register new patients and establishes a medical record.
  • Prepares patient billings.
  • Assists patients by filling out insurance and other forms.
  • Supplies authorized information upon request by third party payors.
  • Instructs patients in preparation for specific procedures.
  • Collects and processes routine laboratory specimen.
  • Operates and maintains clinical equipment.
  • Maintains and uses aseptic technique including sterilization, disinfection and disposal of contaminated material.
  • Cleans, wraps and autoclaves instruments. Cares for supplies and equipment.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
  • Qualifications

    • Demonstrated strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to work well as a member of a team.
    • Computer skills strongly preferred.
    • Must be willing to complete all class activities and assignments as scheduled which may include evenings and weekends.

    Required Licensure/Certifications

    • BLS certification required within 30 days of hire date. Training will be provided if needed.
    • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA-NHA) within 6 months of hire.
