JOB SUMMARY
Dir Surgical Services is responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating the full spectrum of surgical patient care for Baylor Scott and White Health (BSWH), which includes all clinical and nursing care in surgery preparation units, operating rooms, post-anesthesia care units, telemetry units, outpatient surgery suites, or other patient holding/receiving surgical areas. Directs, organizes, and evaluates all patient care services provided in pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative surgical areas in BSWH hospitals, clinics, or ambulatory care facilities. May direct and coordinate a variety of clinical duties, including cleanliness and safety of surgical environments, control of medications, preparation and post-care of surgical patients, and management of surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment. Establishes and communicates the clinical goals and objectives for assigned surgical units or area of responsibility in accordance with the BSWH overall patient care goals and objectives. Develops and implements surgical services policies, procedures, and practices to ensure high quality surgical outcomes and improve surgical patient experience. Maintains and monitors clinical operational efficiency, standards of care, and patient service delivery levels. Negotiates interdepartmental resources and communicates with other BSWH clinical departments to ensure effective and efficient delivery of surgical care.
A system Director translates and implements strategic plans and objectives for area of responsibility. Makes final decisions on operational matters and ensures achievement of objectives. Recommends policies and organizational changes for area. Plans and executes projects and initiatives that meet annual objectives. Erroneous decisions at this level tend to have negative impact on the success of the area, business unit, and possibly the overall organization's operations. Plans and directs the operations of a department or area, with responsibility for staffing, processes, budgets, and costs of the unit. Leads and advises subordinate(s) to meet schedules, resolve technical problems, and monitor performance. Has a larger, more complex organization or functional area than a manager. Often has one or more managers or supervisors reporting to the role.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE
1. Directs system-wide nursing surgical services for BSWH.
2. Recommends and implements strategic and operational plans and priorities for surgical services aligned with BSWH overall business objectives.
3. Leads development and enhancement activities for new and existing surgical services, presenting financial proformas, new business plans and program recommendations to senior leadership.
4. Monitors, reviews, and benchmarks outcomes in surgical services care areas driving sustained improvement.
5. Leads the development and implementation of education and training to surgical services staff on relevant clinical and leadership competencies and other educational needs.
6. Develops and implements peri-operative education, including assessing learning needs, planning education offerings, delivering training, and evaluating programs.
7. Ensures compliance with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements impacting surgical services, including The Joint Commission standards.
8. Develops surgical services dashboard including productivity, patient satisfaction, throughput, quality, efficiency, and effectiveness measures.
9. Leads and collaborates with cross-functional teams and internal and external stakeholders, including nursing, medical staff, operational leadership, community organizations, and other healthcare facilities to develop and implement solutions to surgical services issues and initiate new programs.
10. Facilitates opportunities to participate in research related to surgical services care.
KEY SUCCESS FACTORS
1. Bachelor's degree in nursing or related field. Master's degree preferred.
2. 5+ years of nursing experience in surgical services.
3. 1+ years of experience in a leadership role.
4. Registered Nurse (RN) license required.
5. Experience collaborating across multiple departments and clinical disciplines within a large, complex healthcare organization preferred.
6. Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
7. Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
