Roanoke County Public Schools is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Nurse Manager for the 2026-27 school year.
Position Description/Job Summary: The Nurse Manager supervises and manages the school health program and assures it is consistent with Virginia guidelines, regulations and statutes governing nursing, school health and local division policy.
Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks:
• Supervise nurses and health services district wide.
• Oversee Medicaid program for Nursing
• Communicate effectively with administrators, teachers, parents and community members.
• Assist nurses with issues, concerns and problem solving.
• Provide health care services as outlined in School Nurse position for students at assigned school.
• Develop and implement professional development/meetings for nursing staff.
• Ensure nursing staff complete annual trainings, including seizure management, stock albuterol, diabetes management, and concussion management: and biennial training for CPR/AED and REVIVE Trainers training.
• Ensure athletic trainers complete stock albuterol training annually.
• Provide biennial REVIVE and Stop the Bleed training to assigned staff from each school annually.
• Manage the budget and material resources for Health Services.
• Develop procedures/policies based on technology advances, new state legislation and best practices for health-related issues in collaboration with school district physician.
• Organize interview process with principals and provide recommendations regarding employment of nursing staff. Interview and hire substitute nurses.
• Provide orientation for all new nursing staff.
• Attend local, state, and regional conferences and meetings to remain current on school health and Medicaid related issues and trends. Disseminate information to appropriate staff.
• Organize and develop schedule for mandated vision/hearing screenings
• Organize and facilitate employee wellness initiatives, ex. flu vaccines for staff
• Chair Student Health Advisory Board and Concussion Policy Committee.
• Review TB Risk Assessments for new employees as required
• Authorize Hepatitis B requests and send paperwork to new employees as requested by employee
• Monitor AED's, stock Albuterol, stock epinephrine and stock Naloxone in schools, replacing supplies and accessories as needed.
• Assign technology (I-pads) to nurses as needed based on student population needs.
• Complete mandated VDOE School Health Survey, vision and hearing report and collect scoliosis reports from each school nurse. Ensure completion of mandated annual immunization report by individual schools.
• Complete annual revision of health portion of the OSHA Exposure Control Plan and send to Director of Finance and Facilities Management to combine with SDS portion and update of RCPS website.
• Notify parents of immunization requirements and schedule immunization clinics for secondary students in conjunction with VDH.
• Obtain nursing coverage for summer school as needed.
• Research and obtain resources for nurses.
• Review and revise health related policies and administrative regulations.
• Availability to assist with and report communicable/infectious diseases affecting schools.
• Collaborate with other professionals, team members, and community providers in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluation of school health services and activities.
Minimum Job Requirements/Qualifications:
Master's degree in Nursing or healthcare related field (Preferred)
Licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia or Multi-state Professional Nursing license from another compact state
Current certification in CPR/AED
REVIVE! Trainer and Stop the Bleed trainer training as needed
Strong decision making and problem solving skills
Management and Pediatric Nursing experience (preferred)
