The Nurse Extern is a participant in a 9 to12 week summer program for nursing students. They must have completed a minimum of 1 clinical nursing course in an accredited school of nursing and must have current CPR certification (BLS for Healthcare Provider with the American Heart Association). The nurse extern program is designed to provide the nursing student with an opportunity to strengthen and reinforce his or her knowledge and skill in the practice of nursing under the direct supervision of a registered nurse preceptor and ease the transition of the realities of the work world. The nurse extern will follow his or her preceptor’s work schedule and will care for that nurse’s patients.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Essential Accountabilities Assessment:
Identifies the patient per hospital policy before carrying out functions.
Assists with data collection for nursing history and physical.
Participates in therapeutic communication.
Includes available auxiliary information i.e., physician, lab, x-ray.
Provides information to the registered nurse for coordination of care and
discharge planning including both the patient and family.
Observes skin changes and reports discoloration, abrasions, infestations or skin
breakdown.
Planning
Participates with patient/family and the healthcare team in decisions related to
the care plan of the patient.
Assists in setting mutually agreed upon realistic individual patient goals.
Receives report form the RN on the patient’s plan of care.
Gives RN report before the end of the shift regarding patient care issues.
Intervention
Promotes infection control.
Follows standard precautions and any other isolation precautions as dictated by
the patient’s condition.
Maintains a safe environment and protects the patient from injury. Supports the
observer in one to one/constant observation situation.
Applies and monitors patient restraints per policy.
Observes or monitors behavior/health state and responses to therapy.

Applies current accepted methods of heat and cold therapy.
Provides for the patient’s oral dietary needs using currently accepted methods.
Provides for the elimination needs by giving a bed pan, urinal or implementing
the bowel program under the direction of the nurse.
Inserts urinary catheter under direct supervision of the RN.
Removes urinary catheter.
Assists with colostomy irrigations.
Assists with vaginal irrigations.
Applies urosheath/condom catheter.
Administers cleansing enemas as ordered.
Assists with suctioning under direct supervision of RN.
Performs post mortem care.
Assists the physician to perform physical exams.
Assists with oxygen therapy only and does not regulate the flow of oxygen.
Encourage the use of the pulmonary toilet by using the incentive spirometer,
coughing, turning and deep breathing.
Assists with Hoyer/ceiling lifts.
Reinforces health care instruction to patients according to the directions of the
nurse.

Chester County Hospital - Nursing Extern Program Start Date: Monday June 22, 2025 Summer Requirements: June, July and August – 36 hours a week (3/12 hour shifts) Fall and Spring Semester – 2/12 hour shifts a month (Saturday and/or Sundays) The Nurse Extern-to-RN Program is a training and mentoring program designed for students currently enrolled in an eligible BSN program who wish to pursue a nursing career at Chester County Hospital (CCH) after becoming licensed to work as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The program offers advancement of clinical knowledge and skill by working directly with a CCH registered nurse. The extern will gain a greater level of self-confidence, communication, critical thinking skills, time-management skills and clinical competence through reinforcing the fundamentals of nursing education, theoretical knowledge, awareness of the role of the professional nurse and the understanding of organizational structure and operations within an acute care setting. Externships last approximately one year and begin in June each year. Externs are paid an hourly rate and required to work full-time (35+ hours per week) during the summer and two 8 or 12 hour shifts per month during the school year. Externs may also work supplemental hours as a nursing assistant, tech, or behavioral safety assistant when these hours are available. Externs who successfully complete the program, obtain their BSN, pass the NCLEX and become licensed in the Commonwealth of PA are guaranteed an RN position at CCH. There is no guarantee of desired shift, specialty or weekly scheduled hours (FTE). Externs who decrease their regularly scheduled hours or resign from employment voluntarily are required to reimburse some or all of the program cost. Requirements: · Enrolled in good standing in an accredited Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) program; and currently in the last year of study. Completion of courses in med-surge nursing; and has completed at least two clinical rotations in a hospital setting. Current CPR certification is required After Completion of program · Employment as a CCH registered nurse is assured to the successful nurse extern after completing the Extern Program, obtaining their BSN degree and taking and passing the NCLEX and holding licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Pennsylvania. · At the onset of the Nurse Extern-to-RN Program, the Extern agrees to continue employment in the position of RN at CCH for a period of 18-months. There is no guarantee of shift, specialty or full/part-time status in the position as a CCH RN. Selection is done through posting the position on the CCH Career Website.
