General Description:

Responsible for providing health care services to designated students with special needs. Handles routine and complex medical situations within standard practices. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Registered Nurse. Contacts are made within and outside the school. Requires the handling of sensitive and confidential information, and dealing tactfully with others. Considerable professional judgment is required.

Job Description:

Essential Job Functions:

  • Provides direct nursing services to students and **staff in the school.
  • May be assigned to one-on-one or multiple student care. When assigned to one-on-one student care, reports to home or alternate school in the absence of assigned student and provides required care to other students.
  • Administers first aid and emergency care; performs scheduled healthcare procedures per licensed healthcare provider order.
  • Coordinates and/or performs health care and assists with screenings per state mandates.
  • Ensures adequate supplies are maintained in the school clinic, classroom, and on bus; checks first aid supplies and equipment daily; secures and monitors medications including controlled substances as required by *law.
  • Ensures compliance with all school laws protecting the confidentiality of medical information, of school health *laws and regulations for school officials as needed and personnel, parents and the community; obtains written consent from the parent/guardian to share information.
  • Administers medication to appropriate students, with parental permission and a licensed healthcare provider's order for prescription medication; keeps medication permission forms on file.
  • Documents all skilled nursing care, procedures, and health emergencies. Contacts emergency services and parents when necessary; performs first aid and CPR until help arrives.
  • Assists with toileting and diapering students and general hygiene; may be required to handle seizures and other physical complications; handles various complex positioning equipment; evaluates pain and discomfort levels; evaluates responses to stimuli.
  • Assists with physical therapeutic training, including range of motion skills, fine motor skills, visual perception and social skills.
  • Provides nursing care on Chesterfield County Public Schools vehicles (e.g. school bus, transport vehicle, etc.) as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Proficient in the use of basic medical equipment (e.g. feeding pumps, suction equipment, etc.), computers, office equipment, and assistive technology devices.

Physical Demands:

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to use a telephone, to enter data into a computer terminal; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear, understand speech and speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly at normal levels indoors and on the telephone. Physical agility to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead. Frequent movement throughout the school facilities is required. Occasional lifting of objects up to 40 pounds and moving of students weighing up to 150 pounds with assistive equipment may be necessary. Occasional movement of students by wheelchair and other mechanical devices may be necessary.

Work Environment:

Duties are typically performed in a school clinic and other school settings such as classrooms, gym, cafeteria and recreational areas, school bus and regularly works with medical substances, supplies and equipment. Exposure to potentially infectious diseases and blood-borne pathogens is possible. Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Qualifications:

Working knowledge of medical conditions, symptoms, medications, treatments and proper hygiene. Working knowledge of childhood growth and development, behavior management techniques and clerical procedures; Demonstrated ability to recognize illnesses, injuries, seizures and determine appropriate immediate treatment. Demonstrated ability to obtain appropriate medical assistance to handle emergencies. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and follow oral and written instructions. Demonstrated ability to work well with students, staff and parents in a professional manner.

Additional Job Requirements:

A valid license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia; two years of experience working as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Must be First Aid/CPR/AED certified and maintain current certifications for health care providers (Child and Adult). Some local travel is required.
