JOB SUMMARY

The Surgical Technician Extern is a student who participates in perioperative care under the supervision of Surgical Technician. This role provides hands-on learning opportunities in a clinical environment, supporting the surgical team before, during, and after procedures while gaining proficiency in sterile techniques, instrumentation, and patient safety protocols.

JOB DETAILS AND REQUIREMENTS

Type: PRN (as needed, without benefits)

Education

  • Currently enrolled in, or a recent graduate of, an accredited Surgical Technology program - required
  • Must have completed at least one year of accredited surgical technology program - required

License/Certifications

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association or equivalent - required prior to clinical participation.

Experience

  • Understanding of aseptic and sterile technique and infection prevention measures.
  • Knowledge of basic surgical instruments and equipment.

Job Summary: A nticipates the needs of the surgical team. Establishes and maintains sterile field during surgical procedures in the operating room. Job Title: Scrub Technician Reporting Relationship: Reports to the Clinical Director. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: Include the following. Other duties may be assigned: 1. Efficiently and effectively assists physician with operative procedures · Anticipates surgeon/physician’s needs both in preparing for procedures and during procedure · Demonstrates knowledge of specific responsibilities in all emergency situations. 2. Ensures sterility of all supplies and instruments during set up of surgical procedures. 3. Handles instruments in a manner which prolongs “life” of instrument.] 4. Assists in keeping physician preference cards accurate/updated. 8. Retains all specimens to be sent to pathology, confirming source/name of specimen with surgeon. 9. Transports all surgical equipment to appropriate cleaning areas. Assists in sterile supply with cleaning and reprocessing of instrument sets. 10. Interacts appropriately and effectively with all patients/others regardless of age or ethnic background. 11. Uses Standard Universal Precautions, appropriate hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, and safe practices to ensure personal safety and a safe environment. 12. Assists with environmental hazard and infection control surveillance and participates in emergency preparedness drills. 13. Follows all equipment and safety guidelines and is responsible for knowledgeable use and care of equipment. 14. Serves as a resource to other members of the health care team. 15. Attends in services, conferences, and meetings as required. 16. Communicates effectively and courteously with visitors, physicians, and their office staffs, patients, and employees.
