    About the Unit Reed City Campus has a 20 bed medical surgical unit. This campus is the perfect place to gain experience as a new nurse and grow your career! The patient population in Big Rapids is very diverse, it consists of primarily hospitalist medicine patients with a wide variety of diagnosis, some of which include: pneumonia, COPD, cellulitis, kidney failure, and bowel obstructions. These diagnoses provide the opportunity to develop acute care skills such as IV placement, chest tubes and NG placement/management. In our critical care unit it is common to see high acuity patients with sepsis, hyperglycemia and respiratory failure whose plan of care would include managing medication drips (insulin, vasopressors, etc.) and the utilization of equipment such as ventilators and BIPAPs. Big Rapids has a well-established team that works collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team that includes hospitalists, care managers, social workers, pharmacy, nurse techs, physical therapists, and occupational therapists to provide quality care for our patients. We have a good mix of experienced RNs that work alongside our education team to provide our new hires and grads with a great onboarding experience. For scheduling we currently have a six week rotating core so you are able to determine ahead of time when to schedule appointments, etc. to maintain a good work life balance.     About this unit This is a 33-bed unit for surgical patients who could be higher acuity/progressive level care, known as an acuity adaptable unit. It is created using PFCC principles to care for patients and their families through the continuum of their hospital stay. About the unit 3D is a 22 bed Med/Surg unit at Blodgett Hospital that specializes in the care of patients admitted with complex medical diagnoses as well as a primary stroke center. Staff are often drawn to 3D for the variety of patients and skills utilized. Our team members become competent in caring for a large array of both medical patients and the occasional surgical patients. Specifically, our team is known as being experts in stroke care, sickle cell care, managing tube feedings, and the care of wounds. Some of the patient types we routinely see are respiratory illnesses, acute kidney injuries, diabetic care, septic shock, GI bleed and other acute GI illnesses, sickle cell crisis, pancreatitis, and psychiatric care. The teamwork is strong on our team as we work collectively to provide care. Additional unique skills that nurse hired to 3D will learn include utilization of the NIHSS Stroke Scale.
