Join the fabulous team with Aurora Medical Center-Washington County. We are recruiting an energetic, patient-focused surgical tech for a full-time position to support patient care in the OR and GI Lab. Position will work Monday-Friday with variable start times between 0530 and 0830. Position is responsible for staffing elective surgical cases until 1700. Call requirements of one weeknight per week and one weekend every 6 weeks.

Experience preferred, new grads will be considered.

$26.10 - $39.15

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provides for a clean, safe and efficient area conducive to optimal patient care. Utilizes aseptic surgical techniques in the preparation of materials, supplies and equipment for surgical procedures (e.g., assistance with gowning and gloving; preparation and draping of the surgical area; provision of a sterile field, instruments, suture and related materials; anticipation of the Surgeons' needs; passing of instruments and/or supplies; holding of retractors, observing and reporting possible breaks in aseptic technique; and assisting in maintaining a sterile, dry, unobstructed field).
  • Performs all types of procedures and maintains basic knowledge of a variety of procedures.
  • Ensures the environmental disinfection, safety and efficiency of the operating room. This includes setting up the room for each case including moving equipment (i.e., tables, cameras, microscopes, fracture table, and instrument pans), operating the various types of equipment used during operating room procedures, and returning equipment post procedure.
  • Functions as a Second Assistant as necessary.
  • Notifies appropriate staff of equipment and supply problems.
  • Transports patients and/or equipment and supplies.
  • Maintains a specialty cart or item, ensuring its completeness and availability. This includes checking the working condition of equipment, sterility, and sending damaged items out for repair.
  • Performs various patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper technique.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.


Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required.


Education Required:

  • Completion of an accredited or approved program in Surgical Technology.


Experience Required:

Pay Range $24.85 - $37.30 Applies advanced surgical technology skills to assist in providing patient care in the surgical suite while maintaining a safe work environment and performing all related job responsibilities. Brings exceptionally heightened skills in current specialty areas of neurosurgery and spine, cardiothoracic, vascular, complex orthopedics, or robotics. Ensures quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field. Major Responsibilities Possesses a thorough knowledge of aseptic technique and its application. Assists in obtaining and organizing supplies and instruments prior, during and after surgical procedure. Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization. Assists Registered Nurse circulator in preparation of patient, assembly of supplies, instruments, equipment, and proper disposition of all specimens; assists with all aspects of room turnover. Assigned to heightened specialized procedures: neurosurgery and spine, cardiothoracic, vascular, complex orthopedics, and robotics. Performs duties according to department policy and procedure. Monitors surgical supplies and instrumentation for sterility prior to use and ensures that supplies are used in a judicious manner, charges are documented/submitted accurately and appropriately. Monitors and documents sterilization activities for completion. Attends in-services/staff meetings; exhibits knowledge of current department related issues and participates in Performance Improvement Process. Participates in educational opportunities to increase competency and meet personal needs and goals. Assists in the development of policies, procedures, and standards. Serves as a preceptor, and a clinical resource to others. Assumes responsibility for individual specified unit clinical projects and oversees service lines as needed. Minimum Job Requirements Education Graduate of an accredited school of surgical technology required or successful completion of military training program for Surgical Technology or Operating Room Specialist. Certification / License Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider required. Current certification required. Work Experience 5 years of total operating room experience in surgical technologist role required; 2 years of specialized training in one of the following areas, neurosurgery, and spine, cardiothoracic, vascular, complex ortho, and robotics required. Meets all ST III qualifications of Surgical Tech Ladder. Knowledge / Skills / Abilities Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development and possesses the ability to respond to age-specific issues and data reflective of the patient's status. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for the following age groups: Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Works with occasional intermittent noise and exposure to conditions such as dust, fumes, and chemicals. Ability to communication and write. Strenuous physical effort will require walking, stretching, bending, climbing stairs, twisting, and squatting or kneeling while performing tasks. May have lengthy periods of standing. Requires frequent use of side vision, lifting, pushing, and pulling. Must be able to lift and support the weight of 35 pounds.
