The Med Surg Unit is a 29 bed unit with an attached 7 bed ICU. Adult patients have a variety of diagnosis. Most patients are medical cases. We also see surgical cases including bariatric, total joint, abdominal, podiatry, and more.

About the unit 3D is a 22 bed Med/Surg unit at Blodgett Hospital that specializes in the care of patients admitted with complex medical diagnoses as well as a primary stroke center. Staff are often drawn to 3D for the variety of patients and skills utilized. Our team members become competent in caring for a large array of both medical patients and the occasional surgical patients. Specifically, our team is known as being experts in stroke care, sickle cell care, managing tube feedings, and the care of wounds. Some of the patient types we routinely see are respiratory illnesses, acute kidney injuries, diabetic care, septic shock, GI bleed and other acute GI illnesses, sickle cell crisis, pancreatitis, and psychiatric care. The teamwork is strong on our team as we work collectively to provide care. Additional unique skills that nurse hired to 3D will learn include utilization of the NIHSS Stroke Scale. About the unit 4 West is a 32 bed medical surgical unit located within Butterworth Hospital. This unit is the perfect place to gain experience as a new nurse and grow your career! The patient population on 4 West provides its employees the opportunity to learn about a variety of different conditions consisting of primarily hospitalist medicine patients with a wide variety of diagnosis, some of which include: pneumonia, sepsis, cellulitis, kidney failure, and hyperglycemia. In Butterworth hospital it is common to see high acuity patients which provides the opportunity to develop acute care skills such as patient assessments, IV/urinary catheter/NG tube placement, rapid decline in patient condition, Endotool, etc. 4 West is a well-established team that works collaboratively and functions exceptionally well. This collaboration is not only experienced between RNs or technicians but also the interdisciplinary team on the unit which includes hospitalists, care managers, social workers, pharmacy, physical therapists, and occupational therapists. Nurses and technicians on this unit are also given the opportunity to self-schedule their shifts to assist in creating a work life balance that is best for each individual employee.
