Surgical Technologist 

As the Surgical Technologist, you will be an active member of the team in the Operating Room.

You will function under the direct supervision of the OR nurse. You will be responsible for the sterile field, instrumentation, sterile technique, and other tasks required during the procedure. 

What you will do in this role:   

You will demonstrate knowledge of human growth and development, assessment, range of treatment, and care of patients appropriate to the ages of patients served.

You will promote customer service initiatives.

You will function asscrubperson during operative procedures.

You willdemonstrateabilityto perform technical skills and procedures.

You willassistin the intra-operative care of the patient by performing technical duties as assigned

You will deliver compassionate, holistic care, while supporting the rights and dignity of all patients.

What qualifications you will need:  

Graduate of an accredited Surgical Tech Program or equivalent training.

Certification as a Surgical Technologist preferred.

Surgical technologist students may be hired prior to graduation (within 3 months of graduation). Upon graduation, verification of completion of requirements will be verified. Failure to complete graduation requirements can result in termination of the position.

Detail-oriented withabilityto sustain concentration overlong periodsof time.

Customer service abilities including effective listening skills.

Ability to perform work that requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling, moving, lifting of patients and/or equipment up to 25 pounds

BLS certification (new employees have up to90 days from date of hire to obtain the American Heart Association BLS for healthcare providers)

Parkridge Medical Center is a 270+ bed hospital. We are near downtown Chattanooga. We feature comprehensive diagnostic, medical, and surgical services. These services include cardiovascular surgery and cancer treatment. These services include intensive care,orthopedic andspine surgery, and rehabilitation. The facility includesastate-of-the-artneurosurgery program. Patients also have access to OB-GYN services. Patients have access to a level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. They also have access to (NICU) and behavioral health treatment centers for children and adults.

The ST II performs delegated duties consistent with his/her scope of practice, functions within the philosophy and overall plan of care delivery , is required to take call as needed by the department and completes other duties as assigned . Essential Job Responsibilities: Complies with hospital/departmental policies and procedures, i.e., attendance, mandatory education, safety, infection control, etc. Performs patient care within the scope of training of the OR technician and under the direction of the RN. Respects patient’s rights by maintaining patient privacy, dignity, and confidentiality. Demonstrates ICARE standards at all times . Can recognize and respond appropriately in an emergency situation. Attends unit specific education sessions. Attends 80% of all mandatory meetings and in-services. Reading and reviewing emails and other department communication . Prepares for each procedure and/or surgery. Can organize work and utilize time efficiently. Has knowledge of a safe transfer of the surgical patient. Demonstrates knowledge of the step-by-step positioning of the patient on the OR table. Maintains a clean OR suite for the surgical patients. Maintains a safe environment for the surgical patients by checking the conditions and cleanliness of equipment before procedure. Demonstrates working knowledge of the specific uses of all equipment and supplies used for all cases. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating manuals, and maintenance manuals . Performs intra-operative management of assigned procedures. Initiates and maintains a sterile field throughout surgical procedures by adhering to the principles of asepsis. Utilizes personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriately at all times and monitors other staff for compliance. Assists in preparation and draping of patient and operative site . Anticipates needs of surgeon . Assists the circulating nurse in maintaining correct needle, sponge, and instrument counts. Appropriately handles all specimens. Demonstrates knowledge of and correct procedure in managing patient with system specific procedures. Assumes responsibility for supply and equipment management appropriate to position and in compliance with department standard . Determines priority in supply and instrument needs and ensures availability. Assists in maintenance of instruments and equipment by proper utilization , cleaning, care , and sterilization. Removes and reports all damaged or unsafe equipment. Assists with post procedure workload including: cleaning room between procedures, putting away all unused supplies & setting up for the next procedure. Actively participates in OR turnover . Position Requirements Licensure/Certification/Registration: State of Colorado Surgical Registry required . Current BLS Certification through American Heart Association or American Red Cross . Current CST Certification from NBSTSA preferred. Education: Graduation from an accredited program for Operating Room Technicians. Experience: Entry level to o ne year of experience as a Surg ical Technician preferred . Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Basic to advanced knowledge in the scrub role and multiple surgical specialties. Demonstrates good organizational skills. Communicates positively and professionally with all internal and external customers. I s authorized to ha ndle medications on the sterile field including syringes, needles, etc. and is accountable to the registered nurse for oversight of this practice.
