Key Job Duties and Responsibilities 

The Director of Nursing is required to effectively manage, direct and administer the nursing department in  accordance with company policies and procedures, standard nursing practices and governmental regulations to  maintain quality care for all residents. 

The following is a general list of key job duties and responsibilities in your position. The list is not to be considered inclusive and you will be  required to perform other duties/responsibilities as assigned by an authorized supervisor. 

Duties and Responsibilities 

Comply with the Facility’s personnel, safety, and corporate policies and procedures. 

Comply with the nursing department’s policies and procedures. 

Treat residents, family members, visitors, and team members with respect and dignity. 

Timely completion of assigned in-service training assignments. 

Report to work on time and as scheduled. 

Work with the administrator, consultants and facility staff in planning all aspects of nursing services including the relationship of  other disciplines and departments. 

Monitor Department activities and communicate polices. 

Assist in developing methods for coordinating nursing services with other resident services, inside and outside the facility, to ensure the continuity of the residents’ total regimen of care. 

Assist nursing with implementation and monitoring of policies, procedures and forms for use in Facility. Participate in facility surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies as requested by the Administrator. Participate in developing, implementing, and periodically updating the resident’s written discharge plan. Evaluate performance, assist, coach and discipline as needed.  

Maintain records, manage budgets and supplies. 

Ensure equipment and work areas are clean, safe and orderly universal precautions and infection control, isolation, fire, safety and  sanitation practices. 

Conduct regular rounds to monitor resident care.  

Monitor resident care activities and documentation to ensure the delivery of nursing care according to the physician’s orders. Ensure medication administration is in accordance with nursing standards and facility policies. 

Monitor admissions, discharges and transfers of residents for compliance with facility policies and state regulations. Assist with review and assist with resolution of complaints and grievances. 

Monitor personal and nursing staff understanding and compliance with all rules regarding residents’ rights. Ensure any violation of residents’ rights are reported and dealt with in accordance to facility and state regulations. Encourage attending physicians to record and sign progress notes, physicians’ orders, etc., on a timely basis and in accordance with  current regulations. 

Review nursing documentation to ensure documentation is informative, inclusive and descriptive of the nursing care that is being  provided. That documentation reflects the resident’s response to the care as outlined in the resident’s plan of care and that the plan  is kept current.  

Assist with nursing schedule when scheduler is out of the office, during staffing issues and when assistance is needed. Monitor adequacy of staffing patterns to assure quality care. 

Assures qualified staff is available by engaging in recruitment and hiring staff.  

Ensure the department has a high morale and staff address each other in a respectful manner.

• Must have a valid Registered Nurse (RN) license that is in good standing with the State. 

• Must have a valid CPR certification. 

• If required to operate a motor vehicle for business purposes, must successfully complete the requirements contained in  Company’s Motor Vehicles policy. 

• Must have basic computer skills. 

• Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language. 

• Ability to be on-call as needed. 

• Must be able to work beyond normal working hours and on weekends and holidays when necessary.

• Must be able to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations. 

• Must be able to perform the essential position functions of the job with, or without reasonable accommodation.

• Employee is required to use a transfer/gait belt or to obtain the assistance of another employee when attempting to assist  residents when lifting or carrying objects in excess of 25 pounds. The employee must be aware that during the normal, routine  performance of the essential functions, some of the following body movements may occur naturally, although they may not be a  requirement of the job.

• Must be able to see and hear or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately to ensure that the  requirements of this position can be fully met.
