Summary
Under general direction of nursing leadership, the Manager RN position is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing of the operations and staff of the respective department. This position has 24-hour responsibility and accountability for planning, directing, coordinating, and evaluating nursing care to ensure optimal patient health outcomes in their respective department. This position links nursing leadership with nursing care through the application of organizational and nursing service policies, procedures, and care delivery model. The Manager RN uses the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements to guide leadership and practice. The Manager RN attains knowledge and competence reflective of current nursing practice; promotes innovation and futuristic thinking by incorporating evidence based practice and research findings.
Responsibilities
(50%)*Directs patient activity within the area of responsibility. Provides on-going evaluation of patient status and suggests changes in treatment program to physicians involved as necessary. Makes changes in staffing assignments as level of activity changes. Interprets physician orders and helps staff work within orders to obtain desired results.
(20%)*Participates in direct patient care when needed and appropriate. Maintains quality assurance within the area of responsibility and possesses a high degree of clinical expertise in that area. Remains available for staff consultations and recommends changes when appropriate.
(20%)*Determines staffing needs and scheduling patterns for coverage of unit and coordinates this with the shift administrator. Approves or denies requests for personal time off and corrects staffing accordingly. Provides up-to-date patient status reports to the immediate supervisor. Works within established budget for area
(10%)*Responsible for the hiring, disciplining, counseling and discharging employees within the area according to medical center policy. Evaluates staff within area of responsibility through annual Job Performance Reviews. Takes an active part in nursing management meetings. Serves on nursing service committees as appointed by the Directors.
Other Duties And Responsibilities
Establishes and implements policies and procedures for the area. Develops standards of care for unit.
Maintains quality nursing care plans.
Identifies needs, plans, develops and implements programs for orientation, staff development and on-going employee education. Works with physicians and non-nursing department personnel in planning coordinated patient care. Maintains open lines of communication by meeting regularly with nurse managers, shift administrators and holding regular area staff meetings. Meets with members of medical staff when appropriate to resolve problems and maintain open communication. Follows lines of authority, responsibility and communication within designated area, nursing service and other departments.
Participates in direct patient care when needed and appropriate. Maintains quality assurance within the area of responsibility and possesses a high degree of clinical expertise in that area. Remains available for staff consultations and recommends changes when appropriate.
Plans and prepares the annual operating/capital budget for the unit. Prepares planning proposals, justifications for projects, staffing, capitol development and other financial reports as required by the unit.
Takes an active role in the regular nursing management meetings to influence the direction of nursing service. Actively leads/participates in appropriate meetings. Plans and develops new programs and facility renovation as appropriate. Participates on or leads nursing service committees as appointed by senior management. Participates on medical staff committees as appropriate.
Assures compliance with Joint Commission and MDPH standards. Participates in mandatory weekend/holiday shift administration, coverage for off-shift/part-time shift administrators to include responsibility for entire medical center operation and staffing of departments other than nursing and all aspects of patient care.
Plans, develops, implements and evaluates educational programs for orientation, staff development, and continued growth of all employees within the department. Counsels staff as needed. Responsible for maintaining lines of communication with peers, subordinates, and superiors.
Collaborates with physicians, all levels of nursing management and other departmental personnel in planning for coordinated services to the patient.

BLS - Basic Life Support
Required Equivalent Experience - Within 1 month of hire or transfer
NIMS IS 100 - NIMS IS 100 Introduction Incident Command System
Required Equivalent Experience - Within 6 months of hire or transfer
NIMS IS 200 - NIMS IS 200 Basic Incident Command System Initial Response
Required Equivalent Experience - Within 6 months of hire or transfer
NIMS IS 700 - NIMS IS 700 Introduction National Incident Management System
Required Equivalent Experience - Within 6 months of hire or transfer
NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation
Required Equivalent Experience - Within 12 months of hire or transfer
NSC - Nursing Specialty Certification
Preferred Equivalent Experience - Specialty Nursing Certification or Advanced Nurse Certification preferred within 3 years of hire or transfer to position.
RN - Registered Nurse

Physical/Mental Requirements And Typical Working Conditions
Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. Mayrequire frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling orcrouching.
Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls.
