SCOPE :  Under direct supervision, diagnoses and treats acute, episodic, or chronic illness related to oncology/hematology, independently or as part of a healthcare team; focused on health promotion and disease prevention. Supports and adheres to Tennessee Cancer Specialists Code of Ethical Conduct and Compliance policies.


Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Analyzes and interprets patients' histories, symptoms, physical findings, or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses
  • Diagnoses and/or treats chronic or acute health care disease and illness
  • Recommends diagnostic or therapeutic interventions with attention to safety, cost, invasiveness, simplicity, acceptability, adherence, efficacy, etc.
  • Prescribes medications based on efficacy, safety, and cost as legally authorized basing dosages, routes, and frequencies on such patient characteristics such as age and gender
  • Educates patients about self-management of acute or chronic illnesses, tailoring instructions to patients' circumstances
  • Orders, performs, or interprets the results of diagnostic tests, such as complete blood counts (CBCs), electrocardiograms (EKGs), and radiographs (x-rays)
  • Maintains complete and detailed records of patients' health care plans and prognoses
  • Recommends interventions to modify behavior associated with health risks
  • Develops treatment plans based on scientific rationale, standards of care, and professional practice guidelines
  • Detects and responds to adverse drug reactions, particularly to vulnerable populations
  • Studies current literature, talks with colleagues, and participates in professional organizations or conferences to keep abreast of developments in nursing
  • Counsels patients about drug regimens and possible side effects or interactions with other substances, such as food supplements, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, herbal remedies, etc.
  • Provides patients with information needed to promote health, reduce risk factors, or prevent disease or disability
  • Performs additional duties as requested or assigned

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner OR Physician Assistant program required
  • Active TN state license required
  • Minimum 0-3 years of prior experience in oncology and at least one (1) year of APP experience highly preferred. 
  • Current BLS certification required
  • Required to maintain current education requirements

  • Physical demands of this job typically require a full range of body motion, including manual and finger dexterity and hand-eye coordination for handling and lifting patients as needed
  • Requires standing and walking for extensive periods
  • Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 lbs. 
  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
  • Required to be present at scheduled clinic site to assist patients and co-workers during assigned shift hours.

Thompson Oncology Group (TOG) is a leader in medical oncology services and provides patients access to all proven, drug-based treatments and the latest clinical trial medicines. Our team of board-certified, fellowship-trained medical oncologists and certified advanced practice providers deliver on-site care and treatment, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and hormone therapy, at affiliated infusion centers throughout our region. Position Summary: The Oncology Nurse Practitioner is a highly specialized APRN focused on providing comprehensive cancer care to Thompson Oncology Group (TOG) patients in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. The Oncology Nurse Practitioner (ONP) will provide care to hematology-oncology patients in collaboration with and under the supervision of their supervising physician. As a member of the TOG provider team, the ONP will follow established treatment protocols in their practice. The ONP will be a primary representative of the TOG provider team in the community and amongst our referring partners and will be expected to display professionalism, communicate clearly, and be an excellent collaborator in support of patients. The ONP can expect a dynamic daily clinic where patients may require anything from primary care services to complex chemotherapy side effect management. Performs evaluation and treats acute patient problems, including but not limited to oncologic emergencies, chemotherapy related side effects, and complications from cancer diagnoses. Consults with physician and other medical specialties as necessary; adjusts processes as indicated Performs history, physical examination, analyzes data for appropriate diagnosis and treatment, initiates plans of care for inpatient and office consults in collaboration with the physician, and follows previously established plans of care for both oncology and hematology patients in both the outpatient and inpatient setting. Identifies health hazards in the patient’s environment, as well as patient risk factors. Identifies and considers the cultural patterns, economic status and patient resources in plan of care. Collaborates with social services, nurse navigation, and dietary services to provide holistic patient care. Provides routine follow-up examinations and makes recommendations for adjustments to plans of care, as appropriate. Refers patient to appropriate services when complexity exceeds the scope of practice of the practitioner. Provides pre-treatment chemotherapy education to patients and their families in the office setting. Provides education to office staff as needed. Assists with preparation, administration, and supervision of chemotherapy as staff and physician coverage may require. Assists with office medical procedures as required. Provides first call coverage and assist with morning or evening hospital rounds as required. Serves as a point-person for the oncology group in the inpatient setting. Collaborates with physician to formulate and review medical protocols. Monitors and ensures accuracy of recording on patient medical records. Documents patient history of present illness, review of systems, physical assessment, and plan of care in the patient’s medical record based off of office visit findings. Responsible for conducting periodic review of policy and procedures. Serves as a resource person for other staff personnel. Serves on various committees pertinent to oncology within the Covenant Health System, such as Commission on Cancer and the pharmacy and therapeutics committee First responder to infusion related emergencies or reactions in the on-site infusion center. Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments annually. Works toward achieving goals and objectives, and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested. Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
