FUNCTION

Cares for residents under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse or a licensed practical/vocational nurse.

Education and/or Experience: Minimum High school diploma or general education degree

Certificates, Licensees, Registrations: Graduate of a state approved nursing assistant training
program and passed a state approved competency examination (written and skills) within 120
days of employment; name entered into state nurse aide registry.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Must be able to express self adequately in written and oral communication and to communicate effectively in an
interdisciplinary care setting with residents, families and staff members.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add and subtract three digit numbers; calculate percentage of whole; measure in cubic centimeters (cc’s); measure in
feet and inches. Ability to perform these operations using units of weight measurement, volume, length and height.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.

Dressing and grooming, eating and swallowing
- Maintains range of motion; proper turning and positioning in bed and chair
- Provides bladder and bowel retraining
- Instructs the resident on the care and use of prosthetic and orthotic devices
- Incorporates training and skill practice activities which include repetition, physical or verbal cueing and task
segmentation
• Care for residents with dementia:
- Knows how to respond to residents’ behaviors
- Allows residents to make personal choices
- Provides and reinforces other behavior consistent with residents’ dignity
- Uses the residents’ families as a source of emotional support
- Demonstrates a basic understanding of behavior and functional symptoms associated
with dementia by providing interventions and treatments to help reduce these symptoms
- Uses modification in the presentation of activities of daily living to maintain and
maximize resident competencies and function
- Uses effective intervention techniques to address behavioral concerns
- Acts as a facilitator for activity programming
- Demonstrates effective communication techniques for persons with dementia
• Provides non-resident care including, but not limited to:
- Washing wheelchairs
- Cleaning soiled utility areas
- Cleaning nurses’ station
- Cleaning shower and whirlpool rooms
- Cleaning kitchen areas on the nursing unit
• Provides transporation of residents to and from hospital and medical appointments
