Job Summary and Qualifications

As a Nurse Extern, you’ll be a valued part of the nursing team, gaining hands-on experience as you explore the full scope of the Registered Nurse role. Your responsibilities will include:

Providing essential care for patients by helping with ADLs (Activities of Daily Living), checking vital signs, supporting mobility, and ensuring comfort and hygiene
Performing nursing tasks like wound care, catheter care, collecting specimens, and other basic procedures as you gain experience and grow in your competency
Documenting care accurately and communicating timely updates with the nursing team to keep patient care seamless and coordinated
Helping patients and families understand their care plans and offering guidance for their health and recovery
Keeping patient areas clean and safe by following infection prevention practices, managing equipment, and maintaining an organized environment

What qualifications you will need:

Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
Currently enrolled and in good standing in a nursing program where the controlling institution of the nursing program is accredited under 21 NCAC 36.0302(b)(1).

You will r etrieve supplies from pharmacy, storage room, or tube systems and delivers as permitted by regulation and hospital policy. You will a ssist with patient preparation for surgery or other procedure . You will o rient patients/families/caregivers to room and hospital routine. You will a ssist patients with activities of daily living to include eating and drinking, bathing, shaving, oral care, grooming, and elimination . Changes bed linens as needed. You will p erform hourly rounding and responds promptly to call lights and patient requests. Strives to anticipate patient needs and resolve them proactively . You will act in a composed and professional manner, especially under pressure. You will follow patient and employee safety/security policies and protocols, including hand hygiene, use of universal precautions, use of personal protective equipment, and adherence to isolation procedures. You will perform clerical work as needed, including assembling and maintain ing charts, filing, answering and transferring phones, and relaying messages. You are currently enrolled and in good standing in an accredited school of nursing and can perform higher-level procedures once competency is achieved .
