POSITION TITLE
Itinerant School Nurse/Nurse Practitioner - Special Education
JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
The position of Itinerant School Nurse Practitioner - Special Education is directly supervised by the Director of Health Services . The Itinerant School Nurse Practitioner - Special Education, will support students enrolled in the Program for Students with Exceptionalities delivering direct health care services to students with disabilities, aligned with their Individualized Health Plans (IHPs) and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure the safety and well-being of every student at Pittsburgh Public Schools' Special Education Center schools and other sites as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Provide direct, individualized nursing care for students with exceptional needs in accordance with their IHPs and IEPs. This includes: Administering medications, performing treatments, and carrying out medical procedures as required.
2. Collaborate with Certified School Nurses and school teams to support health-related services and accommodations.
3. Accompany students during Travel Training when medically required, ensuring safe participation in community-based instruction.
4. Provide 1:1 nursing support for transportation and school hours, as specified in IEPs, until the assigned nurse returns or a replacement is secured.
5. Provide nursing coverage on field trips requiring medication, G-tube feeds, or other medical interventions.
6. Rotate regularly between Pioneer and Conroy Education Centers to ensure readiness for coverage during staff absences and to stay familiar with each school's routines and student needs.
7. Provide building coverage and support in the absence of a regularly scheduled nurse at special education center schools when needed.
8. Document all nursing services (dates, times, location, service type, narrative notes) in IEPWriter or a district-designated platform per Medicaid requirements, ensuring the district can receive Medicaid ACCESS reimbursement for eligible services.
9. Communicate regularly with students' physicians and specialist providers (e.g., PCPs, endocrinologists, gastroenterologists) to obtain updated medical orders, LOMNs, medication authorizations, and care directives; confirm that all orders are current, accurate, and compliant with nursing scope of practice before implementation. School nurses are empowered and expected to clarify or question any order that appears unclear or outdated in accordance with professional standards.
10. Provides a health questionnaire and conducts a student/parent interview, initiates, performs and assesses screening tests including: height and weight measurements, vision test, audiometric test, color vision test, scoliosis screening.
11. Performs developmental evaluations and completes physical examinations of students.
12. Offers health counseling to parents and students.
13. Provides individual health education by discussing age-appropriate growth and development with the student during the physical examination.
14. Refers to school and community resources by assessing and arranging appropriate management and referrals for children with health problems who require further evaluation.
15. Prevents and/or controls communicable diseases.
16. Manages illness and medical emergencies.
17. Provides nursing services to meet the special needs of the students.
18. Manages the school environment by identifying and reporting health and safety hazards and modifying student's school environment to accommodate disabilities and/or special needs.
19. Performs record keeping and clerical functions such as maintaining a comprehensive health record on each student, schedule students for mandated services, reports all services rendered, send forms and notices to parents, record results of exams, tests, health room visits, emergencies on student records, reports student immunization information to the state health department, sends and receives referrals and order supplies.
20. Develop and maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships with building and central office staff
21. Other relevant duties as assigned by supervisor in support of the department's or school's goals and objectives and the District's mission and Superintendent's Priority Goals.
EDUCATION REQUIRED
Bachelor's Degree of Science in Nursing
CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE REQUIRED
· Pennsylvania Department of Education Educational Specialist Certification in required area/field - School Nurse Pk-12.
o Individuals who do not hold the PDE Educational Specialist Certification - School Nurse Pk-12 are responsible for the cost of an PDE emergency certification until the required PDE certification is attained.
· Strongly Preferred: Current and Unrestricted Pennsylvania Registered Nurse Practitioner License (CRNP, PNP, FNP)
· Current and Unrestricted Pennsylvania Registered Nurse License

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE
Three (3) years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner strongly preferred
Three (3) years of experience as a Registered Nurse
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
· Strong clinical skills in pediatric health care, including experience with special education and medically complex students.
· Familiarity with IEPs, IHPs, and special education service delivery.
· Demonstrated experience in performing specialized physical health care procedures.
· Ability to prepare and maintain comprehensive student health records, preparing and presenting comprehensive health reports, including state-mandated reports.
· Knowledge and understanding of principles and practice of community health nursing; current practices and trends relating to school health and factors influencing the learning process.
· Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Teams, Word, Outlook, Excel.
· Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
· Ability to exercise a high degree of confidentiality, professionalism, poise, tact and diplomacy to accomplish objectives.
· Ability to work collaboratively as a team player, under pressure with multiple competing deadlines, and with culturally, educationally, and racially diverse internal and external customers.
· Reliable transportation to travel to various school sites.
· Enthusiastic about the fundamental goal of advancing student achievement in an urban public school district.
· Value, demonstrate, and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion .
