GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Chief Nursing Officer is a registered professional nurse with comprehensive responsibility for the assessment, problem identification, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and coordination of all processes which impact the quality and quantity of care delivered to the patients at AdventHealth Zephyrhills and AdventHealth Dade City. The Chief Nursing Officer is responsible for employing strategies to foster health promotion, health teaching, and the provision of educational services and resources. Provides consultation to influence identified plans, enhance the abilities of others, and affects change in the organizations. Under the Chief Nursing Officer’s guidance, evaluation of outcomes is completed in order to assure that the quality of practice delivered by the facilities is directed at improving care delivery and population outcomes. Interacts with and contributes to the professional development of peer and colleagues and collaborates with all levels of nursing staff, interdisciplinary teams, executive leaders, and other stakeholders. Assures the integration of ethical provisions in all areas of practice, integrates research findings into practice, and considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, cost, and impact of resources utilized in the planning and delivery of nursing and other services. Provides leadership in the professional practice setting and the profession, and acts as an advocate for the protections and rights of individuals, families, communities, populations, healthcare providers, nurses, and other professions and institutions and organizations, especially related to health and safety. Adheres to the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics, the ANA Scope and Standard for Nursing Practice, and the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) Nurse Executive Competencies. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.


PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership

  • Promotes system thinking as a value in the nursing organization. Considers the impact of nursing decisions on the healthcare organization as a whole.
  • Provides leadership in building loyalty and commitment throughout the organization. Synthesizes and integrates divergent viewpoints for the good of the organization.
  • Promotes nursing management as a desirable specialty and assures there is a succession plan for own position. Actively mentors others into the leadership role.
  • Acts as a change agent, utilizing change theory to plan for the implementation of organizational change, supports staff during the change, and adapts leadership style to the situations of the change.

Clinical Practice

  • Acts as a change agent when patient care work/workflow is redesigned, and determines the appropriateness of new delivery models which are instituted.
  • Utilizes, interprets, and disseminates evidence based practice and outcome measures in the delivery of patient care.
  • Participates in utilization management, case management, quality improvement, and risk management functions of the organization to assure the quality of care delivered in the organization is appropriate for the patient population served.
  • Applies broad knowledge of healthcare economics, including federal and state payment systems and regulation, as well as private insurance issues, payor mix, and benchmark data.

Regulatory

  • Monitors and educates others in relation to health care policy and interprets the impact of state and federal regulations on nursing in the organization.
  • Participates in the governance of the organization by presenting patient care issues to the governing body, participating in strategic planning, and representing nursing at the organizations governing body.
  • Supports the development and implementation of organization-wide patient safety programs.

Business

  • Analyzes financial statements, manages financial resources, and educates team members on financial implications of patient care decisions. Reads and interprets benchmarking, financial, and occupancy data.
  • Participates in workforce planning and employment decisions, champions a diverse workforce, interprets and evaluates employee satisfaction/quality of work surveys taking action as needed to assure a positive outcome.
  • Identifies clinical and leadership skills necessary for performing job-related tasks. Selects top talent, assesses job candidate skills, and matches organizational needs will appropriate skill sets. Identifies future skill sets needed to remain competitive.
  • Analyzes market data in relation to supply and demand and manages resources to assure appropriate compensation. Develops and implements recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Formulates objectives, goals, and specific strategies related to mission and vision while balancing the financial perspective.
  • Measures and analyzes performance from the learning, growth, business process, customer, and financial perspective. Develops marketing strategies and integrates marketing and communication strategies.
  • Utilizes hospital database management, decision support, and expert systems programs to access information and analyze data from disparate sources for use in planning for patient care processes and systems. Recognizes and assures the utility of nursing involvement in planning, designing, choice, and implementation of information systems in the practice environment.
  • Identifies and eliminates sexual harassment, workplace violence, and verbal/physical abuse. Formulates programs to enhance work-life balance.
  • Participates in the development of bioterrorism, biohazard, and disaster readiness plans.

Knowledge of the Healthcare Environment

  • Maintains knowledge of current clinical practice and is able to articulate patient care standards as published by the Joint Commission (regulatory agency), CMS, and professional nursing literature.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS PREFERRED:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN)
  • Minimum five (5) years experience in nursing


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:

  • Master of Science degree in Nursing (MSN) or in relevant field
  • Management training
  • Ten years experience in nursing with five years experience in leadership roles in comparable health care setting


LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:

  • Current registration with State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse


LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION PREFERRED:

  • National certification in Nursing Administration
