TITLE: SCHOOL NURSE
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid New Jersey School Nurse Certificate.
Bachelor Degree.
Two (2) years experience in public health nursing, preferably in a school district.
Appropriate certification verifying training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automated external defibrillator.
Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.
Proof of NJ residency, as required by statute.
REPORTS TO: Principal
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist chief medical officer, school health committee and Principal in developing school health program.
Participate in work of health curriculum committee.
Conduct school programs of immunization, physical examinations and sight and hearing testing as directed by chief medical officer.
Conduct medical examinations of students, as required by law and/or Board policy, or detects health issues. Refers all cases of suspected disease, illness, injury, abuse to the medical inspector or appropriate agency. Instructs teachers on screening students for health defects.

Teach assigned classes at the times designated.
Assist the District’s medical inspector in conducting the annual examination of students.
Create, maintain and update cumulative health records on all students. Examine students returning from absences due to illness or injury and make recommendations to the Principal regarding their clearnance for return.
Report to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics and other agencies on student health matters, as directed by the chief medical officer.
Visit student homes when necessary.
Assume authority, in the absence of physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered an injury or emergency illness.
Administer first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures.
Implement policy on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases.
Participate in in-service training programs.
Assist school personnel in maintaining sanitary standards in schools.
Perform additional or alternative duties which are within the scope of employment and certification as may be assigned by his/her superior under authority of the Board of Education.
Verify each athlete’s eligibility according to established physical and academic requirements of eligibility for participation in each sport and obtains written parent permission for students to participate.
Conduct annual examinations for visual acuity and record the results in student medical record.
Conduct audiometric examinations of all students annually, as required by law.
Administer tuberculosis screening for students as required by law.
Handle all medical emergencies in assigned building.
Assist in reporting all student accidents that occur in assigned building or attached grounds.
Compile and maintain record of all accidents of staff that occur in assigned building or attached grounds.
Develop and conduct health classes for students and/or staff as requested by the Principal.
Assist the District physician with any required physical examinations of students, make referrals and conduct follow-ups as necessary.
Maintain up to date, confidential health records on all students; maintain up-to-date record of all student immunizations.
Responsible for ordering and maintaining a secure inventory of all required medical supplies and equipment.
Maintain record of all prescription medicines for students and administer as prescribed.
Responsible for monitoring, recording, reporting and controlling any communicable disease through inspections, contact with parents and physicians.
Notify principal or his/her designee to arrange for immediate examination of any pupil who appears to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Confer with and advise students, parents, and staff members on matters pertaining to the health and safety of students. Participates in the development and implementation of the district’s emergency and crisis management plan.
Assist the Principal and the child study team in the identification and placement of students with disabilities who need special education services.
Provide special health care and related services to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
Participate in the development of a comprehensive health education curriculum.
Collaborate with community and other non-school health agencies to meet the health needs of children and families.
Prepare health and safety reports as required by law and/or requested by the Principal.
Report any suspicion of child abuse to the Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS) and building Principal or his/her designee.
Serve on committees as assigned in order to incorporate essential health care information into the deliberations and report of these committees.
Maintain professional competence through in-service education and participation in other professional development activities. Receives training in the treatment of asthma and maintains a valid current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certificate as required by law and administrative code.
Perform such other appropriate duties as required under law or as may be assigned by the Principal.
TERMS OF
EMPLOYMENT: Ten(10) month work year; tenurable.
Evaluated by the Principal, consistent with Achieve NJ standards.
