Job Summary
The Lactation Educator is responsible for assessing, educating and assisting with patients and families who have demonstrated or expressed special needs for lactation assistance in collaboration with the patients primary nurse and physician. This position is represented by CNA.

Job Requirements
Education and Work Experience:
- Associate Degree(A.S.) or equivalent: Required
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing: Preferred
- Experience working with neonates and preforming physicial assessments: Required
- Current RN license in state of practice: Required
- Basic Life Support (BLS OR HS-BLS OR RQIBLS) certification: Required
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification: Required
- Certification as Lactation Educator: Required
- IBCLC - International Board Certified Lactation Consultant: Required within 6 months of hire or transfer
- Registered Nurse (RN) license in state of practice: Required
- International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC): Required
- Assists with content development of policies and practices related to lactation. Initiates a multidisciplinary, goal oriented care plan for each pt with lactation issues in collaboration with members of the health care team and provides patient instruction based on that plan. Plan reflects knowledge and consideration of age specific and cultural differences. Evaluates the effectiveness of the care plan and revises interventions and goals to meet the changing needs of the patient.
- Demonstrates skills in management of simple and complex breastfeeding problems. Compares and contrasts normal and abnormal patterns of sucking and swallowing and establishes and maintains lactation when baby is not feeding at the breast. Demonstrates knowledge and skill in applying counseling techniques to lactating women and significant others.
- Refers clients to an appropriate health professional when the clinical management is beyond scope of practice. Utilizes most current sources to remain current in the field of lactation. Plans and coordinates educational offerings for staff to facilitate knowledge development regarding new trends related to and applicable to the lactating patient.
- Prioritizes appropriately to meet the needs of the patients in the OB/GYN, NICU, Pediatric and Antepartum prior to discharge.
- Completes legible, accurate and timely documentation of all education provided, including evaluation of patient's response to instruction. Assures maintenance of records and statistics related to lactation, including patient phone follow-up after discharge. Interfaces with community groups and individuals in a way that represents the hospital in positive and professional manners.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
