The Nursing Unit Manager is responsible for overseeing staff education, evaluations, disciplines, and HR management; acts as the medical records management system champion; and supervising nursing personnel on multiple units to deliver nursing care within scope of practice, coordinating care delivery, ensuring residents' needs are met in accordance with professional standards of practice through physician orders, community policies and procedures, and federal, state and local guidelines.
  • Essential Functions Statement(s)

    • Oversees staff development, including the training and education of nursing staff 
    • Ensures competencies for STNAs (including catheter, medpath, dressing changes, etc.) 
    • Conducts monthly STNA meetings, discussing any new issues, training, resident concerns, etc. 
    • Completes daily audits of electronic medical records, including follow-up with employees to ensure accuracy  
    • Completes audits of the electronic medication program 
    • Liaises with corporate office regarding electronic medical records, troubleshooting as necessary 
    • Assists Director, Nursing as necessary 
    • Makes rounds with doctor and nurse practitioner weekly 
    • Oversees restorative care program 
    • Conducts interviews for new hires

    • Oversees the proper execution of the following: NG/tube insertion, placement and irrigation; Colostomy care, including irrigation; Foley catheter care, including insertion and irrigation; Texas catheter application; Straight catheterization; Tube feeding, including hanging and labeling, operating the pump, calculating intake and output, ensuring dietary recommended feeding allowances are maintained, monitoring the weights of residents, assessing for abdominal distention and feeding, residual tube placement 
    • Administers proper assessment skills and techniques as appropriate, including the following; Gastrointestinal, genitourinary, pulmonary, cardiac, circulatory, neurological, musculoskeletal, and integumentary assessments; Positioning techniques; Transfer techniques; ROM exercises; Properly performs emergency procedures including: properly administers oxygen, suctions, performs CPR, and uses the ambu bag; Performs glucometer checks 
    • Administers IVs through the following: Conducts IV site care; Applies and monitors a Heparin Lock; Mixes, hangs and administers IV solutions to patients; Computes rate of IV fluid administration; Operates the infusion pump 
    • Performs suctioning, as necessary including tracheotomy, nasotracheal and Tracheotomy care 
    • Administers gastrostomy care through proper irrigation and placement check 
    • Applies proper sterile and isolation techniques as necessary 
    • Collects lab specimens as required 
    • Demonstrates expertise in the care of the patient with a central line; Flushes, infusions, monitoring, tubing, and bag changes, add mixing of meds; Demonstrates expertise in the care of the patient with hyper alimentation; Piggybacking of lipids, site care, obtaining orders, checking contents of bag and label compared to order; Demonstrates knowledge of and monitors for potential complications related to central lines, PICC lines, administration of hyper alimentation 
    • Supervises and assists with meal service, as necessary; Consults with dietician regarding any special dietary needs and follows through on dietary recommendations; Monitors residents with significant weight loss/gain and reports it to the physician and dietician; Identifies residents at risk for nutritional problems and implements preventative measures; Checks food brought by family members, ensuring it complies with residents' orders, dietary needs and safety 
    • Documents medications, treatments, and prn's according to policy; Completes 24 hour report daily; Monitors residents' intake and output; Participates in the monthly medication renewal process; Completes forms used throughout the residents chart; Documents any exceptions to residents' condition, including daily charting on ill residents; 24-, 48-, or 72-hour follow-up charting on residents with infections; incidents or new admits; Interprets policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies as required; Ensures residents charge slips are completed and forwarded to the appropriate department for processing; Accurately maintains daily census reports and submits to business office daily, as applicable; Completes medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, etc, as necessary; Records new/changed diet orders and forwards information to the Dietary department; Reports any discrepancies noted concerning physician's orders, diet changes, charting errors, etc, to supervisor 
    • Assists in completion of the care plans (acute and long term); Participates in care conferences as deemed necessary; Assists in completion of the MDS; Evaluates effectiveness of care interventions, identifies problems/trends and develops alternative interventions; Understands resident's rights and conducts (as appropriate) investigations related to any alleged abuse; Ensures progress notes are reflective of care plan and approaches thereon are properly followed; Assures assigned nursing assistants are aware of the resident care plans, and ensure nursing assistant refers to the care plan prior to administering care 
    • Conducts pre-admission assessments 
    • Oversees the admission process; Orients patient to room, facility, policies; Obtains necessary physician orders; Completes nursing admission assessments; Orders necessary medication, supplies and diagnostic test; Informs nursing personnel of new admissions, expected time of arrival, room assignments, admitting diagnosis, etc. 
    • Obtains written or verbal report from admitting facility on resident prior to or at the time of admission; Oversees the discharge process through the following: Completes post discharge plan; Educates resident on post discharge needs; Completes discharge paperwork; Informs nursing personnel of planned discharges for their shift; Arrange for discharge transportation 
    • Oversees the successful transfer of a patient; Ensures documentation is accurately completed for admission, discharge and transfer 
    • Ensures staff delivers quality care and service, according to UCH policies and procedures, reporting violations, abuse or mistreatment to proper authorities 
    • Dementia Special Care Unit; Follows all appropriate safety and security guidelines, procedures and protocol for residents in the Unit; Maintains appropriate, effective communication with residents, and with residents’ family or other significant relationships; Provides all care, treatment and services with appropriate dementia care protocols; Participates in relevant educational and training activities as appropriate 
    • Maintains confidentiality of necessary information; Handles unusual occurrences calmly and logically to maintain continuity of business and duties; Performs any miscellaneous work assignments as may be required
