IMPORTANT DATES:

SCHEDULE:
• 36-40 hours, three, 12-hour shifts a week following orientation.
• Candidates must have the flexibility to work either day or night shifts to match the schedule of the preceptor they are paired with.

JOB SUMMARY

Performs a variety of patient care and administrative support functions under the supervision of a UVA Community Health Registered Nurse (RN) in an inpatient or outpatient setting.

• Assists patients with personal care as needed for optimal recovery during hospitalization.

Performs basic nursing skills as delegated by an RN and in accordance with policy and procedures to promote patient health and wellness.

• Provides for a safe environment and safe delivery of care.

• Performs administrative support functions.

• Maintains necessary skills and competencies.

Patient Care: Works with team members to develop or improve processes to assure a remarkable patient experience.  

  • Creates and maintains a healthy work environment that results in improved patient outcomes, retention, and organizational excellence.  
  • Collaborates with physicians to develop or improve processes surrounding care of patients. 
  • Coordinates the provision of patient care through delegation, problem solving, time management and organizational skills. 

Quality: Works in partnership with leaders to create, support, and maintain a culture of professional accountability. 

  • Partners with family and patients to resolve concerns related to the delivery of health care. 
  • Assures that team members provide care that is consistent with The Joint Commission and other regulatory requirements.

The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Currently enrolled student nurses who graduate December of 2025-May 2027. BSN students who have completed their 3rd year; ASN students who have completed their 1st year. 

Students may remain employed as a Nurse Extern until graduation completion. Following graduation and board completion they will need to apply for open positions and continue through the hiring process.

Performs clinical procedures, such as specimen collection, venipuncture, EKG, application of sequential compression sleeves, post-mortem care, falls prevention, maintenance of skin integrity and capillary blood glucose monitoring. Sets up for selected procedures and assists RNs accordingly. Assists patient with activities of daily living, such as feeding, bathing and/or toileting. Orients patients to Specialty Service environment. Assists patient with ambulation and all levels of mobilization. Assists with dietary functions, including delivering and collecting patient trays at bedside, passing menus to patients and assisting them with menu completion, mixing nutritional supplements, reporting variation in eating patterns to RN/Dietitian, Maintaining accurate and timely systems for transmission of patient dietary orders and changes. Assists in pre- and post-operative procedures, such as patient transport, completion of pre-op checklist and reception of patient from PACU/OR. Utilizes measures to insure patient safety and promotes a restraint free environment. Maintains use of restraints for patients under the direction of a RN and according to set policies and procedures. Assists in emergency resuscitative procedures as directed by the registered professional nurse. Provides care on the deceased as well as the involved family/significant other. Pertinent observations/specific treatments of procedures administered Patient care delivered on appropriate flow sheets. Assists the professional registered nurse in the collaborative plan for patient education participating in patient/teaching activities. Maintains a safe, clean and functional environment, including ensuring for the comfortable movement of the patient. Assists the patient in room maintenance, such as bed-stripping and trash removed, when necessary. Performs One-to-One and other levels of close observation of patients as ordered, e.g., for safety, elopement, or suicide prevention. Performs correct infection control techniques and maintains isolation status for patients under direction of a RN and according to set procedures. Operates the pneumatic tube system when required. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications High School Diploma / Associates Degree Completion of the first clinical year in an accredited baccalaureate program in nursing, with experience in a medical-surgical rotation. Grade point average of 3.25 or above. Satisfactory nursing faculty recommendations. Other health-related work experience, if available.
