Pennsylvania Hospital is now accepting applications for our Summer 2026 Nurse Extern Program

The Nurse Externship is an 8-week summer employment opportunity for nursing students enrolled in an accredited BSN program who have completed at least one clinical rotation on a medical/surgical inpatient unit and are entering their final year of nursing school. This program is designed to enhance and solidify your nursing knowledge, critical thinking, time management, and skills under the direct supervision of a registered nurse preceptor. As a nurse externyou will follow your assigned preceptor’s work schedule, including some weekends, and will assist in clinical nursing care. The nurse extern position is primarily day shift, with some rotations to mid-shift. Additionally, nurse extern must attend scheduled didactic educational seminars throughout the program.

We will be hiring into the following clinical units and areas:

- Inpatient Oncology/Hematology

- Inpatient Orthopedic/Neurosurgery Surgical Unit

- Inpatient Medicine and ENT Surgery

- Inpatient Medical Surgical Unit & Inpatient Hospice

- Inpatient Telemetry

- Medical Intensive Care Unit

- Surgical Intensive Care Unit

- Emergency Department

- Perioperative Division (4 weeks OR / 4 weeks PACU)

- Inpatient Behavioral Health

- Mom Baby Postpartum

- Intensive Care Nursery

You will be asked in the application process, which two units/areas you would prefer. Please keep in mind we will do our best to accommodate your interest if chosen.

Qualifications/Requirements

- Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA or better in their BSN program

- Must have completed the Nursing Foundations/ Fundamentals Clinical Course

- Must be a rising senior (summer between junior and senior years)

- Must have current BLS certification through the American Heart Association

- Must be available for day and mid shift and working weekends

- Must attend all scheduled seminar

- Must be available June 1 through July 26, 2026, for full-time (36-40) hour weeks

- NO holidays are required
