POSITION SUMMARY
To be fully engaged in providing Quality/No Harm, Customer Experience, and Stewardship by
performing a variety of technical activities related to patient care, as well as support activities in
the operating room under the direction of a registered nurse.
PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITES
1. Perform a variety of duties in an operating room observing proper techniques to include
preparing rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment; open
sterile supplies and arrange sterile setups for operations.
2. Create, maintain, and terminate sterile field for surgical procedures.
3. Properly handle and care for all instruments and equipment. Check materials and
equipment for proper functioning and adequacy; report faulty equipment and
instruments per policy.
4. Assist with precepting new technical personnel.
5. Attend in-services and mandatory meetings.
6. Cooperate with the nurse in the individualized plan of care for each patient.
7. Anticipate needs of surgeon and surgical assistants in the operating room, passing
instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies needed in an operative procedure.
8. Demonstrate an ability to perform all duties required of a Surgical Technologist in
accordance with established procedures and completion of skills check list.
9. Exhibit flexibility and adaptability to changes in room or duty assignments.
Work Experience
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Education: Completion of Health First’s On-The-Job Training Program for Surgical
Technician, OR graduate of a program for Surgical Technologist (Military,
Community College, or School for Surgical Technology), OR one year of work
experience as a surgical tech or surgical assistant
• Licensure: None
• Certification: American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Skills (BLS) Healthcare
Provider Completion prior to start date and maintain in active status.
• Work Experience: None
• Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
o Read, write, speak, and understand English
o Perform basic math o Reliable transportation with ability to respond from
location within 30 minutes of assigned facility when on call
o Flexible and adaptable with daily schedule and assigned tasks
o Respond appropriately to stressful or life-threatening situations.
o Detail-oriented with ability for continuous concentration on an activity.
o Excellent customer service skills with ability to interact effectively with medical
staff and patient care teams.
o Motivated to complete milestones and competencies with ability to receive
constructive criticism and apply to future performance.
o Work autonomously, while consulting chain of command as appropriate.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Certification: Certification as a Surgical Technologist
• Work Experience: One year of experience as a surgical technologist or surgical assistant
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Physically agile; may require walking, standing running, bending, stooping, kneeling,
climbing or crouching frequently
• Medium work that may include lifting or moving objects up to 50 pounds of force
occasionally, with or without assistance
• May require moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments
including tight and confined spaces, including reaching out and above shoulders or over
head
• May lift, turn, pull, push, or ambulate people and/or equipment with or without assistance
up to 90% of the assigned shift
• May be exposed to inside and outside environments with varied temperatures, air quality,
lighting and/or low to loud noise
• May require working with biohazards such as blood/body fluids and airborne particles
following OSHA and CDC Guidelines
• Communicating with others to exchange information
• Visual acuity and hand-eye coordination to perform tasks
• May require travel to various facilities within and beyond county perimeter; may require use
of personal vehicle
