The J6-1 Cardiovascular Stepdown Unit is part of Cleveland Clinic’s Heart, Vascular and Thoracic Institute and provides care to post-open heart surgery patients and telemetry patients who have undergone innovative and cardiac procedures, such as valve replacement/repair, aneurysm repair, Maze, radiofrequency ablation, pulmonary vein isolation, pacemaker and defibrillator implant/removal and robotic assisted surgery. J6-1 also cares for patients who are actively weaning from ventilator support.


A caregiver in this position works variable shifts, from 7:00am—7:30pm or 7:00pm—7:30am.


A caregiver who excels in this role will: 

  • Provide direct nursing care.

  • Implement and monitor patient care plans. 

  • Monitor, record and communicate patients’ conditions. 

  • Note and carry out physician and nursing orders. 

  • Assess and coordinate patients’ discharge needs.


Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing. 

  • Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) 

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA)

  • External applicants: two years of recent related nursing experience 

  • Internal applicants with less than two years’ experience, but post orientation/90-day probationary period, could be considered with the Chief Nursing Officer level review and approval 

  • Will consider military RN experience


Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Bachelor of science in nursing (BSN)

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patient, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.

  • Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.
