Med Tech CMT - Position Summary:

Administer oral and topical medications to residents. This individual must perform these tasks as ordered by a physician, under the supervision of a licensed nurse, and in accordance with state and federal rules and regulations. Also, must perform routine daily tasks required in maintaining the health, comfort and wellbeing of the residents.

Med Tech CMT - Essential Responsibilities:

  • Administers medications as ordered by a physician under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with any state and federal regulations and consistent with community policy.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of “five rights” of medication administration. Administers and records all medication given to residents’ based upon their specific chart.
  • May take and record vital signs of residents as assigned or as may be required by certain medications.
  • Med Tech CMT records the administration of medications and/or treatments appropriately, utilizing the computer system to enter and reference resident information as needed.
  • Observes and reports any reactions and/or side effects of medications to a licensed nurse immediately.
  • Administers PRN medications in accordance with state and federal regulations and consistent with facility policy.
  • Ensure antiseptic techniques and good hand washing practices for infection control, as well as utilizing universal precautions are in place and practiced.
  • Med Tech CMT reports and when appropriate, records any changes observed in condition or behavior of residents and unusual incidents.
  • Submit incident/accident reports to supervisor or Administrator within twentyfour (24) hours after their occurrence.
  • Communicates with medical staff, nursing service and other department supervisors.
  • Med Tech CMT supervises care staff in absence of nurses.
  • Maintains, cleans and organizes the Medication Room.
  • Maintains a liaison with other department supervisors to adequately plan for resident activities.
  • Attends all required training, in-service and staff meetings
  • May be subject to the handling of and exposure to hazardous chemicals.
  • May be subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc, including TB and the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses.
  • Maintain resident confidentiality, staff confidentiality; treat staff and residents with kindness, dignity and respect.
  • Comply with Resident’s Rights rules.

Med Tech CMT - Requirements:

  • A High School Diploma or General Education Degree; or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certified Medication Technician certification required.

Count and document all narcotics that are administered to residents. Responsible for the total inventory of medications at the community; including but not limited to ordering medications, receiving and verifying medications, storing and dating medications, removing expired or discontinued medications, and notifying the proper parties when medication supply is low. Notice discrepancies regarding medication inventory and report to the appropriate parties. Responsible for daily cleaning of all medicine carts at end of shift and restocking as needed. Responsible for weekly deep cleaning of all med carts. Responsible for verifying all current MARs are compared to new MARs at change over time. Provide personal care to residents to residents as needed, including bathing, skin care, oral hygiene, grooming, dressing, incontinence care, and eating. Provide general nursing care to include, but not limited to, vital signs, temperatures, blood pressure, and weights. Document appropriate information in the daily log as required.
