Nurse Practitioner (APRN) Job Summary

This care will be delivered using a collaborative health care model including physicians, other advanced practice nurses, nursing staff, patients, families, and other supportive health care providers working together to provide a holistic approach to quality patient care. The Nurse Practitioner will exercise clinical leadership through clinical practice, consultation, staff, patient and family education, research, and professional development.

Nurse Practitioner (APRN) Job Responsibilities

  • Assess, manages, prescribes, and evaluates appropriate therapeutic and pharmacological interventions for common illnesses according to standards of practice.
  • Consults or makes referral to primary care physician, other health care professionals or agencies when a situation is beyond their level of expertise or when additional services are needed to coordinate their health care.
  • Perform initial evaluations and provide continuing care for patients in our Adult Outpatient Service.
  • In collaboration with the physician, the APRN will perform psychiatric evaluations and provide continuing care for patients admitted to our Mental Health Clinic. This will include comprehensive evaluations and ongoing psychopharmacology.
  • Consistently assesses patients for physical, emotional and social needs as part of overall evaluation. Develops therapeutic relationship with patient. Demonstrates an ability to assess situations to provide timely and effective interventions. Establishes initial diagnosis and treatment plan.
  • Timely and complete documentation in medical records in accordance with professional staff regulations, including specific problems, goals and interventions. Timely and effective documentation of any billing-related credentialing and day-to-day medical encounter and activities forms.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development for ages specific to assigned responsibilities and possesses ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to age-specific needs.
  • Consistently seeks ongoing education and training to maintain an awareness of how best to provide appropriate care based on age-specific needs.
  • Provides patients with the opportunity to increase their knowledge and skills necessary for maintenance or promotion of their health.
  • Provides guidance and support for patients by identifying limitations and utilizing appropriate resources.
  • Promotes mental health advocacy and employs ethical decision making.
  • Provides/conducts educational in-services, both formally and informally on relevant and current psychiatric issues.
  • In collaboration with the physician, and the Program Director, will participate in Quality Improvement activities and help in ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Provide coverage to the Psychiatric Inpatient Unit as needed/required.
  • Ability to provide psychiatric consults to medical floors and emergency department as required.

Nurse Practitioner (APRN) Education And Experience Requirements

  • If licensed after 1999 must have Master’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program required.
  • American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Certification as a Psychiatric-Mental Health-NP Required
  • Must have a nationally recognized certification to practice.
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program required.
  • Current Federal DEA and State Controlled Substance License required.
  • Current Connecticut State RN/APRN Licensure.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in mental health setting required.
  • American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Certification as Psychiatric-Mental Health-NP Required

  • Ability to discriminate between normal and abnormal findings in the history and physical exam in order to establish a diagnosis.
