How to be a role model for your fellow nurses

How to be a role model for your fellow nurses

Being a nurse means you have a great deal of responsibility to shoulder on any given day. You strive to make a difference in the lives of the patients under your care, and you are constantly setting the bar higher for yourself in terms of the quality and efficiency of your work.

Per-diem nurses are a cut above

As a per-diem nurse, it is a given that you are simply the best at what you do. To be able to walk into a new hospital or clinic without any training and jump right into the job at hand, this is your superpower. You have the ability to assess a situation and solve problems quickly. You communicate with ease, no matter who you are speaking to. Your attention to detail and your tech savvy is first-rate. You are the nurse every other nurse wants to be!

As a per-diem nurse representing the IntelyCare brand, it is even more essential to be a role model for your peers. Your core competencies are still rooted in compassion, ethics, confidence, and critical thinking, but as a temporary nurse, you must also be able to listen well, adapt, learn quickly, be accountable, and be able to jump into a team effort without hesitation.

It is this kind of work ethic that makes you a great role model.

How would you describe a role model?

A role model, by its very definition, is someone to look up to, someone who has something that you aspire to have for yourself. You may think that just because you are working at a facility for one day that there is little opportunity to make such an impact – but you are wrong!

The smallest gestures, the little things that you can share that may make somebody’s job easier, this is how you will be remembered and how your input will linger well after your shift is done.

Big things matter – but little things matter too

Sometimes, the simple act of listening is a profound gift. Being able to share your experiences on how to cope with stress or how to deal with a disagreeable situation can make all the difference.

Some of the most memorable experiences we have are not about the grand gestures, they are about the small moments that have great meaning. Being willing to make that connection, to help without being asked, to jump in without hesitation even when the job is difficult, to be honest in the face of adversity, to be insightful enough to see past the most obvious issues – these are the ways in which we can make a positive, lasting impression, and become role models for nurses and CNAs everywhere.

Putting others first

Wanting others to be their best is the hallmark of a great role model. Though you may only be in the facility for a day or two, you may think that you can’t be a catalyst for change (and perhaps there is nothing that needs to be changed) but being a shining example to others of how an IntelyCare nurse handles him or herself is something that is firmly within your grasp.

What’s the catch?

Thanks for your interest in becoming an IntelyPro (an IntelyCare nursing professional).  There are many traits that make someone a great IntelyPro; we’ve listed a few from our recruiting and operations team.

Great IntelyPro’s are:

1. Self-Motivated

“To reap the full benefits of being an IntelyPro you should be eager to pick up shifts!” -Sarah, Recruiter

When you are an IntelyCare nurse or CNA, you are able to set your own schedule and choose how often you want to work.  Successful IntelyPro’s proactively set their schedules for the upcoming week so that they can make the most out of their available time.

2. Team players

“It’s important that IntelyPro’s introduce themselves to the nursing staff when they show up for their shift, especially if they’ve never worked at that facility.  That positive first impression really sets the tone for the rest of the shift.” -Chris, Chief Nursing Officer

Working at a new facility can be intimidating.  However, if you show up with a positive attitude and are willing to pitch in, the facility staff is going to be more welcoming and resourceful to you.  If you work at that facility again, you’ll have already proven yourself to members of their team.

3. Reliable

“At IntelyCare, it’s important to us that our facilities can count on us.  We really value our IntelyPro’s who are punctual and consistent.” -Victoria, Operations

You know what it’s like when the person who is supposed to relieve you is running late to their shift.  Emergencies happen, that’s a part of life.  But, nursing professionals understand that people are relying on them to show up, and to be on time.  If we at IntelyCare don’t think we can count on you, then we don’t want to have our nursing facilities counting on you.
