A Brief Overview

Responsible for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of direct care to assigned neonatal patients with complex health care needs in inpatient areas. Works in an environment requiring continual response to dynamic patient acuity changes with rapidly changing nursing care responsibilities. NICU RNs provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles.

What You Will Do

  • Attends high-risk deliveries
  • Cares for infants transitioning to extra uterine life
  • Provides age and culturally appropriate care to patient
  • Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans
  • Provides nutritional assessment & specialized feedings
  • Changes dressings, inserts catheters, starts IVs
  • Provides arterial & intravenous therapy
  • Monitors and adjusts specialized equipment used on patients, such as incubators and ventilators, monitors, and other life-sustaining treatment
  • Prepares and administers and records prescribed medications. Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments
  • Monitors vital signs and initiates corrective action whenever the patient displays adverse symptomatology, communicates patient’s condition to care team
  • Assists treating physician during examination, treatment and procedures, which can include life-saving situations
  • Instructs and educates patient’s family
  • Participates in discharge planning
  • Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms
  • Performs other position-related duties as assigned, depending on assignment setting
  • Float among pediatric and newborn clinical services, where qualified and competent
  • Delivers patient care in accordance with the ANA Scope and Standards of Care and Practice, Patient Bill of Rights and the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses.
  • Delivers patient care in accordance with specialty specific standards (e.g. Oncology Nurses Association, American Association of Critical Care Nurses) as appropriate
  • Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the patient plan of care according to changing health care needs.
  • Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates patient teaching using appropriate education resources and evaluates the effectiveness of the teaching.
  • Models effective leadership skill through role modeling, mentoring and effective communication. Assumes charge nurse responsibilities as assigned.
  • Directly delegates and supervises the practice of ancillary staff (LPN’s, PCA’s, Tech’s, Unit Secretaries, etc.) and is knowledgeable of the tenets of the NJ Scope of Practice guidelines.
  • Supports a professional practice environment by functioning as a role model and resource person and also functions as a preceptor for nursing staff and participates in the orientation of other unit employees.
  • Participates in unit-based and organization-wide activities, committees and community activities as appropriate
  • Identifies own learning needs with respect to nursing practice and pursues educational support to meet these needs.
  • Routinely utilizes Evidence Based Practice literature, policy and procedure manuals and other available reference materials to ensure consistency and accuracy in the delivery of care.
  • Participates actively in the Performance Improvement process to evaluate the quality of nursing care delivered to patients
  • Other Responsibilities:
  • Completes required orientation as directed by facility
  • Follows facility and OSHA safety rules and procedures while on assignment
  • Respects cultural and religious practices of patients
  • Upholds HIPAA regulations
  • Punctual and dependent for assigned/confirmed shifts
  • Uses medical equipment, including incubators, feeding tubes, and oxygen hoods.
  • Follows neonatology guidelines, regulations, and standards.
  • Adheres to hospital policies and procedures.

Education Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required
  • Bachelor's Degree BSN preferred

Experience Qualifications

  • Minimum of one (1) year NICU experience required

  • Neonatal physiology and disease knowledge - Understanding premature babies' developing systems, common conditions, and management.

  • Technology proficiency - Expertly operating complex NICU equipment like ventilators, monitors, IVs.

Licenses and Certifications

  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure Current NJ License upon hire required and
  • BCLS - Basic Life Support through American Heart Association upon hire required and
  • PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support through American Heart Association upon hire required or
  • NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation upon hire required
  • RNC-NIC - Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing upon hire preferred or
  • CCRN - Critical Care Registered Nurse (Adult, Neonatal, and Pediatric Acute) NICU specialty upon hire preferred
  • STABLE - Neonatal Certification upon hire preferred

About The Team Our NICUs are sophisticated intensive care units that offer technologically advanced equipment and a wide range of cutting-edge therapies. Our NICU medical teams are on-site around the clock and attend every delivery in which postnatal complications are deemed possible. Patient care in the NICU is dynamic and personalized, with an emphasis on Family-Centered Care. In fact, parents and families are an integral part of the healing process. At Goryeb Children’s Hospital, Morristown Medical Center, has a 34-bed Level III NICU. It is designated a Regional Perinatal Center by the New Jersey Department of Health. At Overlook Medical Center, the 15-bed NICU is also a Level III unit. Both NICUs are equipped to care for extremely premature infants and babies with a wide variety of illnesses, genetic conditions, and surgical requirements. Our neonatologists and advanced neonatal practitioners are on-site 24 hours a day in order to provide continuity of care to our patients and coordinate care decisions with other pediatric subspecialists. At Chilton Medical Center, the NICU is a Level II Special Care Nursery, an additional setting for high quality neonatal care within Atlantic Health System. The SCN provides care to infants born at a gestational age of greater than 31 weeks who require critical care, including infants with infections and respiratory problems. Job Description Responsible for working with other healthcare professionals to help treat patients with various injuries, illnesses or disabilities. Monitors patients, administers medications, keeps records, consults with healthcare providers, educates patients and more. Principal Accountabilities Maintains accurate, complete health care records and reports. Administers medications to patients and monitors them for side effects and reactions. Prescribes assistive medical devices and related treatments. Monitors, reports, and records symptoms or changes in patient conditions. Assesses, implements, plans, or evaluates patient nursing care plans by working with healthcare team members. Records patient vital signs and medical information. Performs other related duties as assigned. Required QUALIFICATIONS Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program. Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse. BLS certification.
