Overview

The Registered Nurse– Functions as a member of the surgical team to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical, therapeutic, and diagnostic procedures. Responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care, in coordination with other health care team members, according to the patient care delivery model of the center. The patients to be served include infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric. The Registered Nurse possesses advanced knowledge and clinical skills in pre-procedure preparations, airway management, cardiac arrhythmias, invasive lines, regional blocks, and anesthetic medications to effectively meet the needs of the patient preparing for or recovering from anesthesia. The Registered Nurse also possesses knowledge of care for the patient intra-operatively and providing a report of intra-operative care to the nurse who will be caring for the patient post-operative. The Registered Nurse may function as a member of the sterile surgical team, assist in other clinical departments as needed, including the preparation of instruments and supplies for procedures.

Responsibilities

Clinical Excellence/Patient Care

  • Assesses the needs of patients and families, providing appropriate teaching and making the necessary referrals to provide continuity of care.

  • Consults appropriate resources within the surgery center to provide specialized education.

Qualifications

  • Successful completion from an accredited registered nursing program
  • Current Licensure in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Iowa
  • Must possess current basic life support (BLS) certification
  • Writes, reads, comprehends, and speaks fluent English
  • Multicultural sensitivity
  • Critical thinking skills using independent judgment in making decisions
  • Basic computer knowledge using Microsoft Office, web browser, and email

Demonstrate competency in the following: angioplasty, coronary stents, balloon valvuloplasty, Swan Ganz/right heart cath, pericardiocentesis, intra-aortic balloon pumps, Impella, and recognition of cardiac rhythms. Apply nursing theory to the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of patient responses to health, illness, and procedure. Positively collaborate and coordinate the continuum of care within a multi-disciplinary team and across divisions/units. Perform patient care according to patient priority (includes interventions identified through nursing diagnoses), and departmental, divisional, and/or unit policies, procedures, and protocols to maintain safe environment for patients, visitors and staff. Document/report interventions and patient/family response. Follows universal precautions. Precept new staff at the direction of the Procedural Nursing Manager and/or Procedural Clinical Practice Leader. Follow policies and procedures in accordance with regulations set forth by the University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Nursing, UI Heart and Vascular Center, and the University of Iowa. Must take On-Call assignment (arrival at UI Health Care within 20-30 minutes required). Certification/Licensure Requirement Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) required by start date. Current certification in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) required by start date. Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by start date. Desired Qualifications 1-3 years direct nursing care experience in Critical Care (ER, ICU), Cardiovascular Care, and/or Operating Room within last 6 months. If Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is not yet obtained, active enrollment in a BSN program. Previous EPIC experience. Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) certification.
