The Manager, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) provides leadership, direction, and guidance to
CRNAs and Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists (SRNAs) and manages nursing and administrative operations
of nurse anesthesiology. The Manager, CRNA will oversee all aspects of CRNA and SRNA work functions,
including scheduling, HR, payroll, recruitment, performance evaluation, etc. In this role, the Manager, CRNA
provides guidance to CRNAs/SRNAs on the appropriate care for patients in a variety of procedural settings, and
ensures compliance with organizational and regulatory agency standards, and is responsible for the daily twentyfour (24) hours operations.
 

The Manager, CRNA is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who practices in collaboration with a
variety of health providers on the inter-professional team to deliver high-quality, evidenced-based anesthesia
and pain care services. The Manager, CRNA is responsible to the leadership of the Department of Anesthesiology
and the leader for Advanced Practice Providers. The Manager, CRNA functions as an integral part of the medical
team, and will support clinical practice, leadership, administration, and service excellence in the Department of
Anesthesiology, while maintaining clinical duties and responsibilities as a certified nurse anesthetist.
 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

• Manages nursing anesthesia services assuring that all aspects of patient care comply with the Joint
Commission standards, policies, procedures, and state and federal regulations.
• Coordinates patient care delivery among departments such as pain service, pharmacy, laboratory, Labor &
Delivery and perioperative care, etc. where anesthesia services are delivered or ancillary support is required.
Provides support for family and member centered care.
• Acts as the liaison and point contact for management and other departments for escalated and complex
issues.
• Schedules and adjusts staffing, as appropriate, for fluctuations in workload.
• Leads staff recruitment, selection, development, retention, evaluation, and performance of nurse anesthetists
in compliance with Cedars policies and procedures. Coordinates and develops onboarding process for all new
CRNA hires and ensures record keeping process is in place for documentation of training and orientation
processes for all new hires.
• Advises staff on complex patient cases. Identifies unsafe patient care practices and initiates intervention as
appropriate. Refers diagnoses or escalated medical issues to the supervising physician.
• Regularly reviews and updates policies and procedures relevant to Nurse Anesthetist practice and
recommends changes in support of delivery of care and ongoing compliance to organizational and regulatory
requirements. Represents anesthesia service line in committee workgroups and meetings.
• Develops, reviews and revises educational and clinical guidelines as appropriate. Facilitates access to
continuing education programs and in-services. Identifies nurse anesthetist development needs.
• Leads and actively participates in the Medical Center's Performance Improvement Program and periodically
assess the quality of patient care delivery and identify opportunities for changes in practice, rooted in
evidence-based standards of care/protocols, to promote positive patient outcomes. In partnership with
department leadership, identifies and implements cost-saving activities.
• Implements operations processes and workflows that contribute to improvement of quality of care and
safety. In collaboration with leadership, develops and implements strategic plans to support new processes
and procedures.
• Participates in and recommends CRNAs to departmental and or house-wide committee work where
appropriate, determines and guides clinical policy and practice standards related to area of expertise.
• Coordinates SRNA rotations in collaboration with the department’s Academic Office, SRNA programs, and or
nursing office.
• Performs and maintains clinical duties and responsibilities. Cares for patients at all acuity levels in a variety
of settings for procedures including but not limited to, surgical, obstetrical, diagnostic, therapeutic and pain
management.
• Analyzes new skills, technology, and equipment for safety and clinical/fiscal efficacy. Ensures safe and cost
effective medical care is provided.
• Manages emergency situations by assessing, stabilizing, and determining disposition of patients, including
providing airway management, administration of emergency drugs and fluids and using basic and advanced
cardiac life support techniques.

Anesthesia Full Time 84567BR Job Summary Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) Administers anesthesia to patients undergoing surgical procedures in an operating room, or to patients undergoing diagnostic or therapeutic procedures outside the OR, under the supervision of a faculty member of the Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Care at the UCSF Medical Center. While CRNAs licensure affords them the same independent practicing rights as their MD colleagues, the CRNAs at UCSF work collaboratively with UCSF's Anesthesiologists to form an Anesthesia Care Team. UCSF CRNAs are licensed, registered, advanced-practice nurses whom, after obtaining experience as a Critical Care Nurse, completed a post-graduate master's or doctoral degree focusing on anesthesia practice. We provide anesthesia services at all the UCSF medical center campuses to a variety of patients across the life span. Additionally, UCSF CRNAs provide a positive learning experience for those students completing clinical rotations from the Samuel Merritt University's, nurse anesthetist program. The CRNAs at UCSF are proud to continue the 150 year practice of nurse anesthesia in collaboration with UCSF's Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Care. Required Qualifications Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and possession of the legal requirements to practice as a Registered Nurse as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing Graduation from a school of anesthesia accredited by the Council of Accreditation of Schools of Anesthesia Master’s degree from an accredited Nurse Anesthetist program Knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position Preferred Qualifications n/a License/Certification Active, unrestricted Nurse Anesthetist licensure in California Active, unrestricted Registered Nurse licensure in California Current National Certification by the National Board of Certification and Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists Current American Heart Association BLS certification for healthcare providers Current American Heart Association ACLS certification Current American Heart Association PALS certification Registered Nurse as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing UCSF Medical Center and Campus requires certain healthcare providers to be credentialed. In most cases this is done through its Office of Medical Affairs & Governance (OMAG) prior to the first working day.
