LOCATION: Lancaster General Health & Women and Babies Hospital in Lancaster, PA. 

SCHEDULEFull-Time, Day Shift. Monday through Thursday with potential for 12 or 10 hour shifts depending on the rotation assignment. This is an 8 1/2 week program which runs from the end of May 2026 through the end of July 2026. 

Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health invites nursing students to gain hands-on clinical experience through our Student Nurse Extern Program. This paid opportunity pairs externs with experienced RN preceptors across two nursing units in 4-week rotations, allowing students to apply their skills in real patient care settings. Externs will assist with procedures, manage patient assignments, and observe interdisciplinary collaboration. Weekly Educational Extern Conferences support professional development, and an optional winter clinical rotation is offered for those interested in additional clinical growth during their school break. 

Assists in the provision of patient care under the guidance and direction of the registered nurse. Patient care/customer service includes care/service to patients/customers in the following age groups: newborn, adolescent (13 through 18 years), adult (19 through 64 years), and geriatric (65 years and above).

What you will do:

  • Assists RN in completing Nursing Procedures, data collection (Patient Data Base) and patient/significant other education.
  • Performs and assists RN with skin care and patient hygiene (e.g., dressing changes, duoderm application, and ROM).
  • Performs basic pulmonary procedures (e.g., voldyne, pulse ox, specimen collection, trach care, and suctioning).
  • Provides comfort, basic support, and safety measures for patients and significant others.
  • Completes errands as directed by RN or designee.

Qualifications:

  • CPR Certification - American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support,  required within 30 days of hire. AHA Heart Saver courses for CPR are not accepted. 
  • Current nursing student enrolled in an ASN or BSN program. 
  • Completion of at least one nursing clinical rotation in an acute care med/surg setting prior to start of externship. 
  • 3.0 GPA or higher
