The Alaska Psychiatric Institute (API) is recruiting for a
Psychiatric Nurse 3 What You Will Be Doing:Direct and/or personally administer nursing care of a shift or other organizational unit; review and establish appropriate standards and procedures; evaluate and recommend staffing to provide optimum nursing care; interview and hire nursing applicants as appropriate; and schedule and assign personnel to provide appropriate nursing coverage.
Monitor staffing levels and overtime utilization. Record staff leave utilization and manage scheduling software. Review and certify the accuracy of employee timesheets.
Coordinate nursing services across all necessary departments in the organization or institution. Review admissions, discharges, and nursing care provided to ensure services meet the objectives of the institution.
Observe and evaluate staff performance and provide on-the-job guidance, training, and direction to nursing staff to subordinate professional and paraprofessional nursing personnel. Identify training needs and provide for training through in-service training sessions, staff meetings, or other means.
Conduct nursing assessments regarding patient's physical, behavioral, and mental condition; nursing care needs and legal status; and report changes to the treatment team
Administer psychiatric and behavioral health-related medications, treatments, and narcotics as required. Transcribe all orders, recording this information in each patient's Medication Administration Record (MAR) and chart regarding patient behavior and responses to medication treatment.
Interact with patients on an individual or group basis, responding to specific needs; intervene and direct situations requiring advanced expertise; direct and assist in the control of combative patients as necessary.

Two years of professional experience as a Registered Nurse, one of which must have been as a full-performance/journey level Psychiatric or Corrections Nurse. This latter experience may be met by prior service as a Psychiatric Nurse 2 or Corrections Nurse 2 with the State of Alaska or its equivalent with another employer.
Substitution:Combinations of prior training and experience in other specializations of nursing care (e.g., Med-Surg, Corrections, Public Health, Critical Care) will be evaluated for comparability on a case-by-case basis.
Special Note: Candidates not currently licensed by the State of Alaska, who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska and requisite qualifying experience, may apply for vacancies in this job class. Applicants qualifying under this option may receive a conditional job offer; however, proof of licensure will be required prior to final appointment and reporting for duty.
Some positions may require the successful applicant to pass a background investigation, including fingerprinting, as a prerequisite to employment. These requirements will be indicated at the time of recruitment.
