School nurses are the liaisons between the education and healthcare systems. They play an important role in ensuring students are well enough to absorb the material they’re learning. If you want to become a school nurse, make sure that your resume and cover letter set you apart from the crowd.

When you’re applying for a school nurse position, your resume shows future employers what you have done. Your school nurse cover letter is your chance to tell them more about who you are.

First, show that you’ve done your research. Add personal touches like the hiring manager’s names, or unique facts about the school that make you want to join their team. Do you know someone already employed there? Mention insights they’ve shared with you to show you have in-depth knowledge of the school. Communicate why you’d like to work with them out of the many schools you could have chosen.

Although you can hint at soft skills in your resume, your cover letter is where you can really show your personality. Compassion, empathy, and patience are some examples of soft skills that are crucial to school nursing. Share examples of how you embody those traits.

Prioritize your most relevant work experience in your school nurse cover letter. You can also describe any volunteer work you’ve done or include a personal experience that impacted your career. As long as you’re strategic about what you share, this can help make your cover letter shine brighter than the rest.

Dear Ms. Steinberg,

I’m reaching out in regards to your school nurse position at Charter School. I am an empathetic, patient, and driven individual who delivers compassionate care to my patients. I love watching young people become successful, and I thoroughly enjoy helping them whenever I can. School nursing allows me to use my nursing expertise while building a strong connection with students and their families.

At Quakertown Elementary, I assisted and nurtured young children during their most formative years. On top of performing first aid in an age-appropriate manner, I helped inform students’ burgeoning knowledge about how to take care of themselves, such as proper toileting, how to express their feelings, and how to handle conflicts with peers. I also developed a rapport with parents and incorporated their valuable insights when caring for their children.

At Providence High School, I was tasked with supporting students as they transitioned into adulthood. I provided education regarding diets, sexual health, and other healthcare needs as they arose. I participated in the school’s anti-bullying program by sharing how bullying impacts health and ensuring the nursing office was a safe place for all students.

I also have experience with volunteering at youth organizations. I’d be happy to discuss my involvement during the interview. Thank you for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
